Not certain how much oil you would really lose through your leaks. Can't just put oil in "blind" so I'd use a gauge to put refrigerant only in and see how it works!

If below your compressors needs the compressor will probably die from lack of lubrication. Most likely not but no way of telling, for sure, without knowing how much oil is there. I'd give it a shot....

I'll dump in one pound today and see what happens, will I get a warning if the oil is low?

Only reason I suggesting putting refrig in and trying it is we don't know his financial situation. If he can afford buying the compressor, dryer and the work involved, that is the preferred way to go. If you can see "stuff" leaking out of the compressor, my guess is "topping it off" probably won't work. If the compressor does "die" they tend to throw all kinds of nasty shit throughout the system and the repair WILL be bigger. It is really a risk the owner needs to evaluate on his own (as long as you know the risks).

Gents, thanks for the honest thoughts!..........money is an issue now, so this is what I did.
Today I charged 2ozs of PAG oil into the compressor, and added one 12 oz can of R134.
It seems to be ok, air coming out of the panel registers about 40 degrees.

I don't know what the problem is (besides cost) on why the compressor is such a big deal to replace?"To Find yourself, you must first lose yourself"

One thing I noticed, and this was seen before I put in a new blower motor and resistor, it seems the force of the air coming out of the vents is somehow effected by the position of the gas pedal, in other words at a steady speed all is ok, feed gas, the air slows down, somehow I think this is vac related. I know I need a new heater core, if I attempt to modulate the temp degree on the slide panel (away from 65) smoke pours out from the registers, I assume this is heated anti-freeze?........slide the switch back to 65 smoke goes away.Originally posted by miamibob View PostTime will tell - if it stays that way, you're "golden"!!

When the system is open it's a good time for an A/C system overhaul, orings, accumulator, orifice tube, etc. Not very expensive. Just imo.

Never heard of this before...

I've seen this before... it was coolant and there was a pinhole leak in the heater core.
