Can I get an eduation on the 84 Town car.

Well a month after my wife totaled her 89 town car. She was able to pick up an 84 Lincoln Town car signature, for $200. Can someone educate me in the 84 town cars. I believe it is a CFI 302. I just got home from a month long trip to FL so I haven't gotten to check over the car yet. So my wife's big car jones is cured.

'84 has the CFI 302 and boxier exterior styling. It probably won't have the get-up-and-go of the '89, but they are good cars nonetheless.

Not too much is different from the 89 Town Car, except the CFI of course. If it runs good, leave it alone. Service it just like you would the 89, and enjoy!

You do have to press the gas to the floor once to set the 'choke' on cold days and/or maybe cold starts, like a carbureted car.

Love my '84, have had it now for 13 years....a lot of adventures (both good and bad, enough to fill a screenplay), will keep it forever.

change the vacuum lines, tune it up, replace the timing chain. Largely the same sort of things any of these have, except the CFI-specific goofiness. If its not doing retarded things, don't poke at it excessively. Its not going to go fast, just maintain it and enjoy.

Still plastic gears for the '84 right? If so, change those out too.

yes. Plastic up to 85 at least and hit or miss to 87 or 88.

most after 86 didn't have it, but I have seen an 88 with a destroyed motor from those crappy gears. I think they must have run out of the non-crap gears on occasion and put some leftover BS in.

not that hard... just very time consuming since you have to take EVERYTHING off the front of the engine. Torque wrench required.

more time than anything. If you've ever done a water pump, add maybe an hour and a half to that. Replace the pump and maybe the balancer while in there since they have to come off anyway. front seal on the timing cover also gets replaced. Would also be the time to swap the fan clutch or belts since it has to come off anyway.

Love the 84s. Was the first Lincoln that fueled my obsession that I have to this day. Uncle Ed had an '84 Cartier. Looked just like the one attached. Absolutely beautiful car.

I much prefer my '84 over the 'newer' models....the squared, non-angular design gives it a very stately and elegant appearance.

I'd like to see an '80-84 with the '85-89 bumpers on it. That's my main gripe about the earlier Panther TCs: the bumpers that stick out the sides beyond the fenders/quarters. This suited the barge Lincolns and box Panther CV/GM much better than the '80-84 TC, IMHO.

Legitimate gripe. I've heard others mention that as well. They do look a bit odd with the "overbite" on each side. I guess I never really studied it that closely.
