    water pump reccomendations

I decided to track down the coolant vapor smell I'm getting from under the hood of the 91 - I've got dribbles (under pressure) coming from behind the water pump, and some seepage from the t-stat gasket and all the hose clamps in that area. I'm going to replace just about everything, I just wanted to make sure I didn't buy a pump we are supposed to avoid!

I've changed mine a bunch of times, but I couldn't swear whats on there now. It may have come from Advance. Stay away from the reman pumps though, and make sure the bushing is in the fan clutch if its needed.

the duracrap I got from AZ (not even the heavy duty pump... just the normal one) is still working like a champ on the 88 some 5 years later.

My auto zone duralast pump did pretty well for the few years i had it on. Gates makes good stuff, OEM for a lot of brands. That's what i have on there now

Make sure it isn't just your lower radiator hose dribbling. Been there done that.

That's what I've been telling myself all this time... lol.
Alas, I saw definite dribbles coming from behind the backing plate.

Do we need to put thread sealer on any of the bolts? I thought that was just for Chevy's... but a co-worker asked if I put any on the bolts for the Bronco I just did... now I'm 2nd guessing myself!

make sure you put rtv on both sides of the backing plate gasket!

the long ones that go into the water jacket wouldn't hurt to have some sealer. If not, they'll rust shut soon enough anyway.

I had gotten the BOSCH 98205 HeavyDuty Water Pump $ 60.79 @ rockauto before 5% discount as well as the CLOYES C3057X Double Roller Timing Set $ 39.79 .

Was gonna have the pump painted Hi-Temp Ford Blue, but it came CHROME.

The parts are here... I went with a bosch regular-duty pump for 35 bucks. Rockauto had ALL the hoses on closeout too...
Does the backing plate only have two of its own bolts holding it on??? I thought I put a pump on the 85 and don't remember it being like that! but that's how the one on the 5.8 I just did was...
How does it not crush the gasket from having to tighten those two bolts up all the way first?? I wasn't as worried about it when I was putting one on someone else's vehicle... lol. ...no wonder they like to leak there...

for some reason I wanted to say it was 3 or 4 bolts holding the backing plate on, but they're all at the bottom. Maybe its only 2. Its very uneven and crappy, whatever the arrangement is.

Just my .02, but since your taking everythign out I would probably change the timing cover gasket and timing chain

Not a bad idea... I could make a good write-up too.
I wasn't planning on it since the 91 had the engine rebuilt in 2001 by the previous previous owner, but it's probably gotten 100,000 miles since then. I should check the receipt for the mileage...
My ultimate goal is to 'not have to go there' again, so maybe I'll go ahead. Of course I will if I snap any WP bolts off... lol.
