there are 2 sets of bearings related to the AC compressor, neither set runs full time. There is a bearing in the clutch assembly that works with the AC OFF. There are bearings in the compressor itself that work when the compressor is ON. If the whine is present both off and on, I'm about 95% sure that it is not coming from your compressor. The smog pump and the idler pulley run all the time, look there for your noise.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

Yeah, I checked it, it whines a heck of a lot more with ac off. When its on, I can hear the power steering pump.
So if that is the case, do I replace the compressor?"To Find yourself, you must first lose yourself"

nah... just the compressor clutch (if you have to tools - or get the loaner tools from AZ).
had to do that with my 88 recently. if your compressor is the same as mine, you'll need snap ring pliers to get the damn thing off. using the 45 degree pliers helps loads. You'll need the beefy version too... the little pliers set is too small to really do the job (I ended up breaking one of the prongs on mine).Last edited by sly; 04-22-2014, 10:09 AM.

Ok, I will loo kon the manual to see how to do that, I guess you cna buy bearings for the compressor??? I never did it before. I know Jon (Vicky) here on the forum said that he put dye on the refrigerant and he say it leak on top of the compressor. That is why I guess it would be easier to replace"To Find yourself, you must first lose yourself"

The AC off bearing for the compressor is in the pulley part of the clutch. It's replaced with the pulley.

well... there's a bolt, but then you have a couple of snap rings inside to be able to actually get it off of the compressor.

I just added shims one by one until it didn't scrape when I spun the pulley.
