'85 Grand Marquis will not start...

...but it really, really wants to! I just bought a 1985 GM from my co-worker. It has 36,600 original miles and has been in his family since 1987, so I know the miles are right. His mother-in-law owned it, and drove the car very seldom - maybe five miles a week! She passed away and left the Merc to him. He drove the car from where his m-i-l lived to his home. It started right up and drove fine. After sitting for nearly four months, though, it refuses to start, even with a jumper battery hooked up. It acts like it wants to start but will not. I've checked the fuses, and hit the fuel reset button next to the trunk hinge, and can't see anything amiss. Yes, it has fuel in the tank. Everything else electrical appears to be working. I've heard the car run before and it sounded great. It needed a jump then, but it ran just fine. It did not exhibit these signs before.

    Any ideas???

Gas is four months old. It cranks to the point where it wants to fire off, but doesn't fire off.

change the fuel filter. if there's been condensation in the tank and water build up, it might have clogged the filter with water (it's a water trap). Happened to my dad and his F150. Changed the filter and it's all good.

Spark and fuel. If the engine cranks over, these two are very important. Do you hear the fuel pump buzz, after turning the key to the "run" position? Do have spark, when cranking the engine?

This. See if you have spark at the spark plugs. If so, try spraying some starting fluid in the intake and see if it starts to kick over.. if so it will hopefully just be fuel related.

I can't remember if there's a test port on the fuel rail off the top of my head. (I feel like there has to be.) I did find this pic.

Try seeing if you get a fuel spray there to verify fuel pressure.

Someone feel free to correct me if I'm having a brain fart.

Isn't 85 CFI? I think that fuel rail would be for SEFI. I'm not familiar with CFI so I'm not sure if it's set up the same way and if it has a schrader valve for testing fuel pressure like the SEFI has (red arrow in the pic).

Yes CFI has a pressure test port.

I was able to get the car to start, by holding the gas pedal to the floor. It'll start, then immediately quit. It'll also do the same with an ether shot. So, very little to no fuel.

Where is the test port on an '85 5.0L???

its on the CFI unit. I think you have to remove the air cleaner lid and it lives inside. Look for the thing that looks like a tire valve stem and thats your port.

Might have a gray cap on it that unscrews to get to the valve.
