    More police package questions -VIN related

    I am looking at a 1990 Crown Vic supposedly with the police package and a HO 5.0L engine. Looking at the VIN, characters 5-8 are P72F. From my research, the P72 is the taxi package, but the guy claims that in '90, P72 was the police package. Is this correct? Also, it is my understanding that "F" in the VIN refers to the base 5.0L, but he says it has the HO. Using only pictures of the engine compartment, how do I tell if it is a HO?
    On a slightly different note, I have found reference to certain vehicles in the GM/CV/TC family that have aluminum parts (versus the steel parts on my '87 GM) such as an aluminum drive shaft, bumpers, hood, etc. Any ideas on which models and which years?
    All stock \'87 GM--except for the sound system! Alpine V-drive CD deck, Infinity Kappa separates up front, Blaupunkt coaxials in back, Alpine V12 5 channel amp in the trunk, with a 12\" Rockford dual voice coil sub. All this with complete high quality custom wiring. Kaboom!

    I don't know about the VIN # but as far as the engine goes it may have an HO emblem on the upper intake manifold, where it says 5.0.

      P72 = Police

      If it does have a HO it did not come from the factory with it.

        Yea, no such thing as a factory 5.0 HO car.

        Well, not counting mustangs, mark 7s and MN-12s, of course....

        Anyways, check to see if it has HO firing order, HO upper, etc..

          P72 = Police/Fleet from '87-'92. '93 on, P71 = Police and P72 = Fleet.

            No panther ever came with a H.O. If it does indeed have one, it is a swap. Check the firing order and computer markings. The upper intake isn't necessarily the giveaway.

              The Police package was available for order on pretty much any car, so the VIN doesn't designate anything important. The build sheet on the car is more important. Police package usually includes 140 speedo, HD frame, rear sway bar, etc. the VIN # only indicates the vehicle trim level.

              P72 = fleet
              P73= base model
              P74 = LX

              on 93 and new vehicles the P71 in the vin indicates a Police car.

                From pics I at least tell it has the 140mph calibrated seepdo. At this point, I'm convinced its the police package. Now I need to figure out if it has the HO motor. I'll email him about the firing order. What is the HO firing order?

                  302 HO and 351W ignition firing order is; 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8

                  HO would also use 19lb injectors, which have an orange top and can easily be seen from the drivers side.

                  I seriously doubt the car has an HO motor in it.

                    '90-91 Boxes had aluminum bumpers. I have not yet figured out the logic of why some cars got aluminum driveshafts and others did not. I have seen both air shock versions and standard versions of 90/91 cars with aluminum.

                        The auto-level air shock system was an option on most things. I think it came with the trailer tow package and on most Towncars after 87 or 88. My 86 it was optional on.

                          Maybe the aluminum driveshafts were a running change that Ford never mentioned?
