I am getting ready to replace the water pump in my 87 Town Car. I now work for Pep Boys and I stumbled upon the difference in the listings between the 89 Crown Vic/Marq/TC and the 87,88 Crown Vic/Marq/TC water pumps. The 87/88 lists a Bosch 98057, and the 89 lists a 98072 aluminum. I am very familiar with the differences between the timing covers and the rotation of the standard vs reverse drive setups. My question is why they switched to an aluminum pump, and whether the 89 CV/GMarq are standard rotation like the rest of the Box Panthers. I'd like to go with the 98072 aluminum pump for my 87 Town Car if it is a standard rotation pump. I am going to take the backing plate off of each and see if the impellar spins the same way on each of them, but if anyone would venture to say what I might find I'd appreciate it.

same direction impeller. i would go with the cast iron one mang, it has 2 extra bolts and they seem to hold up better. the quality of the aluminum pumps has gotten spotty i have noticed.

Either way, I compared both pumps and as expected they both have the same pulley bolt spacing, same impellar rotation, same height. The only differences are two less bolts to leak from. Furthermore, the impellar on the 89 aluminum pump is wider (sits at the same depth) and may push more volume. I am curious though why the bolt holes in the aluminum pump are so much bigger. The backing plate has the same diameter bolt holes, but the pump casting holes that they slide through are larger.87' Lincoln Town Car Stars + Stripes. if they've never been used, they are probably packed full of crud. might have to douche it out with some carb cleaner and run a tap in there to get the junk out before running the bolts in. those bolts don't go into the water jacket, so no leakage from them. I think only 2 of the bolts (or is it 4?) go into the water jacket anyway. The rest all go into the cover.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

My friend put in the cast iron pump into his '83 CV and the thing is now covered with surface rust. Did you guys paint your cast iron one when you put it in to keep it from rusting up? I put in the aluminum on in my '89 and it's been fine. I also used the aluminum one in my '91 GMQ when I had it.

Yeah they flash rust almost instantly...if you go with the cast one, take the time to tape it and paint it first. Unless you don't care what it looks like, then don't bother, that rust won't really hurt anything, at least not in the next 50+ years.
I'm curious as to the weight differences, 87stars_stripes, is there any specs on those to find out?
