    Weird noise

Ok so my '90 wagon is making a weird noise from under the hood. Sounds like you are shaking a spray paint can real fast. It makes it when:

You are cruising down the highway. Let off the throttle and it doesn't do it. Press the gas just a hair and it starts making noise. Press it just a little more and it goes away. Other then when the throttle is closed it only does it when you are cruising and at the top 1/4" of throttle. Past that it doesn't do it. I was thinking maybe valve train noise or something but I don't know...

may be detonation. Try running a tank of premium and see if it takes it away.

        I usually run 89 but I tried 93 and it's still there.

Check your timing. If it is over-advanced it will detonate. Running the wrong plugs, having a too-lean fuel mix, or having malfunctioning EGR also makes this worse.

I'll check the timing, I just got a new light. Do you unplug the TFI to check the timing or is there a spout connector?

I recently replaced a bunch of vacuum lines and put a new egr valve, position sensor and solenoid in.

unplug the SPOUT connector, which is next to the TFI. Should be 10BTDC.

Check it for codes too, just in case that has anything to tell you
