    Starting issues also fuel related.

    Howdy again,

Thank you to all for all of the previous advice in keeping this beast on the road.

Once every ten to 15 times my car will not start. The starter turns over normal. I spray some starting fluid into the throttle body and it starts right up and idles and runs/drive fine. I drive an hour to 1 and 1/2 hours in rush hour traffic twice a day. If I try to start up again right after driving, it starts. In the morning it starts. It seems to NOT START once and a while after being driven and sitting for and hour or two.

I am hoping it is the fuel filter needing changed. I am going to change it this weekend. I hear the fuel pump turn on sometimes, usually when there is not much gas in the tank. By not much I mean a 1/4-1/2 tank of gas.

    questions are
Will a bad fuel pump keep the car running after the prime with starting fluid?

How difficult to install an electric fuel pump and hopefully not have to deal with the stock fuel pump in the tank?
This is for a 1991 GM again.

    Thank you,
    Mike

usually fuel pumps work or do not. A pressure test will confirm. If its too low to start, its probably going to be too low to run worth a damn.

no way around dealing with the pump in the tank. Thats where it lives. If its bad, you have to remove it and replace it. I think the later cars allow you to swap the pump without dropping the tank though.

If it starts up and runs fine every time with a spritz, it might not be the pump. It still could be the pump getting weak, but ours usually work or don't work like the G man said.
It's probably a long shot, but next time it happens tap the IAC with something solid. When those act up they can behave like a no/poor fuel no-start problem.

If you aren't comfortable dropping the fuel tank, I wouldn't recommend trying to install an aftermarket electric pump inline somewhere, if that's what you were asking.
