    Failed Emissions...again

Brought the LTD to get tested...failed. 351 with the VV. Ive done a lot of work recently to it that should have helped with emissions, not hurt. Heres a list

Rebuilt carb and adjusted jets leaner
    New EGR
    New vacuum switches
    New vacuum lines (fixed leaks)
New cats of 1.5 years ago
    New timing chain.

Runs like a top, no problems at all but here are the readings i got

    Idle:
    HC: 231 standard 220
    CO% 2.93 Standard 1.20
    CO2% 13.2
    O2% .2

    High Idle
    HC: 204 standard 220
    CO%: 2.97 standard 1.20
    CO2%: 13.4
    O2: .1

I was considering pulling a couple vacuum lines and getting it retested, however I'm a bit leary, I'd prefer to actually fix it...as my gas milage would most likely get better. Any suggestions?

By the numbers, its still running rich. Or maybe its burning some oil, but either way you've got incomplete combustion going on. Running too cold will tend to make this worse, so make sure the car is good and hot before testing it. Is the factory fresh air intake still there? If not, put it back on. Colder air is more dense, so in theory it should marginally lower emissions figures vs hot under-hood air. Related to that, make sure the flapper that switches from fresh air to manifold heat stove is doing it's job.

I know it's running rich..i made sure it was hot before the test. I've never seen any smoke come out of the tailpipe either on startup or running, so I don't believe it's burning oil. it has an aftermarket chrome air filter on it, the stock piece is kind of trashed, plus the hood is up when they test it, so i don't think it would make a big enough difference to help... Originally when i got the car the figures were below 50PPM for the hydrocarbons, It would be nice to get that low again. The jets are turned pretty far in, the stepper motor SHOULD be able to compensate for this, so something is certainly wrong.

also... how beat are the cats. IIRC the O2 should be higher than that. I'll have to check the generics on my cars when I get home to verify... and I'll probably not remember to until I see this thread again at home.

Hm, does the converter require the smog pump injection? Most replacements dont, but if yours does, make sure its hooked up.

Any chance of internal leakage in the carb that might be letting more fuel past than the idle fuel mix screws would allow for? High float adjustment can do this too. One problem that some carbs have with age is leakage around the casting plugs at the base of the bowl. No clue if the VV has this, but Qjets were known to have that problem. The usual tell is you can watch fuel dribble into the intake if you open the throttle wide open and have a gander after shutting the engine off.

As a quick fix, you could dump in a couple gallons of E85.. Would clean right up for the test.

It does have the pipe for the smog pump, which is all hooked up and operational.

It could have internal leakage, I'll look down the throat and pull it to test if i have too... the float was replaced adjusted to spec at the time of the rebuilt, so that is most likely fine.

Another option is the computer isn't running quite right for whatever reason, and causing the pintle to rich the mixture out. However it does perform a self check...

I'd just hate to toss out the VV after everything I've put into it in an attempt to keep it original.

30 yrs old, and NJ still smogs them??? Hell, in NY they stopped smogging everything built before 1996. As of 2014, my 89 GM only has to go for safety at $10.

Maryland emission-tests all regular tagged cars from 1979 to current. They did away with the treadmill, and all OBD I cars require a sniffer test every two years. My car wouldn't pass unless I drove it for at least an hour before hand (150k+ cats)...but then I went with Historic tags and was exempt from the tests.

Anything not registered historic gets smogged here as far as I know.

How old is the oxygen sensor? Possible its failing in such a way that the computer things the mix is lean. The pintles do actually work, right? They're not just stuck in the rich position?

Sounds like you may need to change the O2 sensors. and you may have bad cats too. good luck.

o2 sensor is a bosch, about 1.5 years old with the cats. The stepper motor with pintle is motorcraft OEM and is "new" and tested out of the box as of 1.5 years ago.

I hope you can understand my frustration as just about everything emissions wise has been rebuilt or replaced with new.

It is possible something is bad and i can retest them...however they were tested when i got them.
