    Lopey Hot Restart Idle

    91 Grand Marquis wagon 5.0/AOD.

    On a hot restart, where heatsoak has occurred...such as driving the car for a good while, then shut down/parking it for 20 minutes, then coming back outside to restart it, few things I noticed...

    -Always, Idle wanders...it increases too high, then is too low, and it's like a pendulum swinging, but streadys to the correct RPM after say 20-30 seconds.
    -Fuel pump makes some odd noises sometimes
    -On a really warm day, 85-90F+...Requires just minor tip in on throttle to get the idle to hold. After 15-20 seconds, noise from pump dies, you can release throttle and idle is fine. Won't die at lights. Runs flawlessly otherwise besides what sounds like knocking under heavy acceleration from a stop.

    Anyone ever encounter this?

    I should probably check for codes...

    Didn't know a car that old could do codes?

    Could it be the TPS sensor?

      Sure it's OBD I codes as opposed to II (2).

        +1 check for codes. it's normal for idle to wonder for the first 15-30 seconds when heat soaked or cold due to the air charge temp sensor... takes a bit for the air in the intake to stabilize to what's actually coming in.

          OK cool, that's good to know. Thanks.

          I found 2 broken/dry rotted vacuum lines under the hood. So it runs infinite times better.

          Will check for codes. Is the air charge temp sensor something changed out normally? IE if it's carboned up, is it wise to change it out?

            nope. That one works or doesn't. don't change it unless it's dead. Since you had busted vac lines... that was probably your issue. These beasts like their vacuum lines intact. You should probably inspect and change any other cracked/peeling lines.

              Yup. Plan to take manifold off when I get another (busted off nameplate bolts). Will inspect/replace as needed. But per vacuum gauge it's operating correctly now.

                  Pop the air temp sensor out and wash it off if you feel inclined. They don't go bad often, but having them totally slobbered up doesn't usually make them work any better.
