Hot to the touch dipstick

On hot days like the northeast has been having, absolutely. Especially after driving in traffic. Under hood temps get WAY up there in that case. Plus, the metal tube and dipstick radiates heat from the sump and block.
Without a temp gauge on these things it's hard to say if your running too hot or not. If it's not boiling into the coolant reservoir, and the engine light isn't flickering, I wouldn't worry too much about it.sigpic

My brother has one of the IR temp gauges. I could borrow his. Where should I insert (shoot/aim) the temp gauge at? and at what temperature should it be at?"To Find yourself, you must first lose yourself"

and the engine was turned off2-5 minutes already.
Additionally, when I was changing the belt, the car was sitting for two hours when I rested my arm on the upper intake for a little bit.. I had to get off of it cause it was getting hot!"To Find yourself, you must first lose yourself"

the stick may well be hotter after 5 minutes than immediately after the engine is shut off. heat soak and all that. with no airflow, things tend to get a little warming initially before cooling down after a few hours.

To check water temp I point it at the thermostat housing. it should be near the temp of the thermostat unless it is really hot out.03 Marauder DPB, HS, 6disk, Organizer Mods> LED's in & Out, M&Z rear control arms, Oil deflector, U-Haul Trans Pan, Blue Fuzzy Dice

between about 190 and 210 is normal. this is running though. If it's allowed to sit and soak for a while, it could go as high as 260.

my car starts and it has AC. Yours doesn't start and it has no AC. Seems obvious to me.

Its also immersed in engine oil that contacts the hot engine block. The oil is typically not much cooler than the engine coolant is. Theres a reason that some high performance builds use an oil cooler.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).
