i would leave it in the car.. but rebuilds in a 4.2 are stupidly pricey for what it is.

my plan are to pick up a 70s 302, fresh build on it, and drop it in. i got a shelby intake thatll look badass perched on top that engine with cobra valve covers, but id have to do some mild street parts and a 4bbl for that intake to function properly and im not so sure i wanna get 10mpg... this engine build is after all supposed to be practical as the Merc still is my daily. plans are to get my LTD rebuilt before the Merc though. i cant stand to see her sit there and not be driven, and seeing as how shes got every bit of 148k and a LOT of engine noise and leaks, she comes first.. i wanna get 200k outta the 4.2 anyway, only 51k to go LOL

The 70s were the dark years for the 302. Low flow heads and weak rotating assemblies. You are better off starting with a 1986 or newer shortblock with a roller cam. Explorer heads are almost free these days and they outflow any other 289/302/351W factory head which came before them. A set of GT40P heads will get you the best mileage.

Skip the disco era motor, you want at least an 86+ roller block. Explorer motors are definitely the best value in stock parts.

whatever i go with will be a carb.. so if i go with the 86+ block and gt40 heads, 2bbl and mny current exhaust (factory mustang shortys and side exit with glasspacks) what kinda mileage will i be lookin at? just a ballpark number?

and how will that compare if i go to the shelby intake with a 4bbl? obviously mpg's will be lower but by how much?

also note im not PLANNING on any trans work or ratio changes. (who knows alot can happen in 50k)

a well tuned 4bbl and 2bbl will get the same mileage when you keep your foot out of it. The 4bbl will give you more top end haul ass when you nail it. well tuned lean burner special can get as much as 30mpg with highway gears (2.73/3.08) and keeping the speed down around 55-60.

whats the best bet on my gear ratio?. i really have no clue. according to my autozone special tachometer, im around 1100 at 40-45 in 3rd, which is my usual/average cruising speed

1st -2nd is around 20-25 i believe depending on how i pedal it, 2nd -3rd is 40ish, i usually get just over 35 and let off to make it shift, then OD is around 55.. no idea really, i rarely get to 50. hope that helps narrow it a bit

2.73 probably. what's the AX code on the door tag?

to be sure, look at the axle tag that's located on one of the differential cover bolts.
