Idle creeps up after standing for a period of time

I left the new car sitting idling this morning to dry it off a bit after doing some degreasing. I came out a bit later and it was running at about 3K rpm. Shut it off and restarted it and the idle was back at the normal rpm. I'm wondering if it was something to do with temperature, the cooling system isn't too good, and to top it off the fan clutch is shot. I remember something about idle getting bumped as temp increases.

    Any ideas?

Fair guess. These will run the engine speed up in an overheat condition to try and cool it. Don't know how high it will go but 3k sounds a bit nuts. If the red engine light of doom was on though, I can believe it.

No lights... Also a bit hard to tell the RPM without a tach. It seemed a bit high though.

I want to run the codes, but i can't find my damn EEC4 scanner.

When the electric fan's failed on my 89 it got hot enough to throw the red light of death and it didn't bump up the idle at all.

And reading codes with anything other then a paper clip, come on now....

Yeah, well I have the scanner somewhere....I've always had a scanner.

TPS looks recent. Easy enough to check.

My buddies '88 marquis did weird stuff like this when his TPS was dieing. It would idle normal then hunt, then go back to normal. Then got to the point, the RPMs would jump for a bit, then go back to the hunting idle. Normally, the high engine speed would happen when at op temp.

Had an IAC that would hang up once in a while. If you shut it off, it would reset its position. Then as it was commanded open again it would get stuck.
