Earlier today I was driving back from the mall in some pretty bad traffic. Once I started accelerating onto the highway the Check Engine Light came on. I slowed down a bit to merge and the light disappeared. I began to notice that the light would come on whenever I accelerated. The weird thing is that it only did this for a few more minutes and it didn't come back afterwards. I've never had to deal with the CEL on my car, so I don't know if it means that something is loose? I don't know what to make of it since it didn't come back. I do have an OBD I Ford Scanner but if the light only came on a few times and went away, will the code still be stored in the computer?

yes, it'll be stored. Do a key on, engine off test and it should pull the stored codes. Last time I had similar symptoms it turned out to be a TPS fault, and the codes agreed.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

The car decided to shut off as I was backing out of a parking space today. This happens only once every 3-4 months, but I think it's probably related to the Check Engine Light somehow. I'll have to dust off the code scanner once I get home this weekend. One of my friends said that it might be an O2 sensor on its way out (happened in his Grand Prix.)

Sounds like a TFI module or PIP pick up in the dizzy, on its way out.

Did the Key On, Engine Off test. Only code it pulled was a Code 34. According to the book, it could be "Insufficient EGR flow" or "defective EGR pressure transducer sensor."

34 could also be a chunk of crap under the EGR valve that doesn't let it shut all the way but often its a flaky position sensor. These don't have flow sensors.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

What is the best way to diagnose the position sensor?

hook a voltmeter to it and see what the voltage output is. Pull vacuum on the egr valve and see if the sensor output changes like it should.
if the sensor seems to respond OK but the closed voltage is a CH high, you can sometimes pull the sensor off and lightly file the end of the sensor shaft to get it in spec. If its way high, make sure the valve itself doesn't have a turdnugget of stuff in there jamming it up.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).
