    Fuel Tank and Pump Fitment?

So I got the fuel pump ready to install. I go to drop the fuel pump in place and the mounting flange doesn't line up with the fuel tank opening. No matter how I rotate it, it won't drop into the mount. The tabs that go into the 6 o'clock and 11 o'clock positions line up, but the fuel pump mounting flange is off center. Is there a trick to mounting the fuel pump? Perhaps I am doing it wrong? I have yet to locate the maintenance manual; so I am probably not doing this right. I am glad that I am doing this now, rather than after the car is apart.

you are putting it in the right opening right? There are two on the early tanks, the rear one is the pump, the front one is the fuel level sending unit. Otherwise it just sits there. I think there is a locating tab or something but nothing particularly involved.

The sending unit is the smaller hole right? When I get home, I'll see if the fuel pump fits the smaller hole. It looked like it wouldn't fit at a glance, but perhaps I am wrong and I have it backwards; fuel pump in smaller hole and sending unit in larger hole. Which is another issue for another thread I guess. My sending unit is either sunk or not working. And getting a new one is now null and void. I'll cross that bridge when I get there. Ugha!

dont know which is bigger honestly. Its been a while since I had the tank out. It only fits in one hole though.

Yes this is the 190 pump install. But I reassembled the stock unit to see if it wasn't me that errored. As it turns out, the Airtex (E2087H) fuel pump is slightly out of spec. Either the brass housing that goes into the fuel tank is bent wrong, or the flange is too large of a diameter. I played with the top tab and bent it inwards and it dropped in a little further, but the flange hits the hold-down tab on the fuel tank. I think it's the right fuel pump, but the dimensions are a little off. Not the first time this has happened. I could grind a little off the flange, but I would rather return the fuel pump and get another before doing that. I'm glad that I didn't cut or modify anything yet.

Is the fuel sender from a '83 MGM the same as an '86 CV?

I think they used a low pressure in tank and a high pressure outside the tank back then... If it only has one pump in the tank, it should be the same.

So somebody beat me to the punch and knabbed the sender off of the '83. So the question now is........are the '86--'87 box senders the same as the '88--'89? I noticed an '88 MGM with a sending unit that's separate from the fuel pump. Hopefully the tanks are similar enough to swap them out.

I dry fit the airtex pump hanger into the new spectra tank for the wagon and it fit no problem. Are you working on a wagon or a sedan?

The airtex I have is the same USA made 190 lph part number E2087H mentioned earlier. That was sold by rock auto for the 89 wagon. The 89 wagon does not have the sender and pump integrated in one unit.

Yeah, I found the right fuel pump. THat's no problem at the moment. Right now it's the sending unit. Since the stock '86 CV sending unit appears to be unobtanium, I have to figure out an alternative. I am hoping that the gas tanks of the '88 and '89 CV/MGM are similar to the '86 and '87 fuel tanks. I imagine that if they are, I can use the '88 MGM sending unit in my '86 Crown Vic.
