Replacing crankshaft sensor 1983 mercury grand marquis 302in 5.0L F series

The 302 in 5.0L TBI engine is identified by the F in the 5th digit in a 13 digit VIN# or the 8th digit in a 17 digit VIN#. The sensor is located next to the crankshaft pulley on the passenger side next to and above the vacuum pump bracket. First you will need to jack the car up. I placed a 1 1/2 inch thick concrete block under both wheels as well. You will need to remove the vacuum pump bracket and battery ground cable and wiring harness to make enough room to work. Using a 7/16 angled box wrench, remove the retainer clip on top, not the block the sensor is inside of.

Inserting the new sensor and retainer clip is tricky since it's hard to see the angle they go back in with. Total job took me over 3 hours. You should have better luck though. It is possible to change it out without removing the vacuum pump bracket, but only if you have small hands. When connecting the elec plugs on top of the engine, be sure to hold the wire on the other side so it won't be pushed out instead of connecting properly. Mine has a tendency to fall back out as well, so electrical tape will help ensure it stays put.
