    surging....

I havent posted much on here, mostly due to forgetting passwords and whatnot. Anyway, I have a 91 Mercury Grand Marquis, love the car, but its got a few problems. The biggest right now is a surging problem.
While the car is sitting idling, you can hear it. Its not extreme, but definitely noticeable. Also when the car is cold in the mornings, I'll be going down the highway going 55-60 and if i stay consistent on the throttle the car starts bucking like a crazy horse. If I press the gas, even slightly, it'll stop, or if i let off the gas, it stops. This only happens for the first 3-5 miles, and thats it. I dont know if the two issues are related or not, i'm just hoping somebody can help me out. If it helps the car has roughly 165k miles (the odometer is broke but i found a receipt from late last year from the previous owner of an oil change and it said 145k miles), I am the 3rd owner. I changed the throttle position sensor a couple months ago, but it was a cheap one off ebay.

    Any help would be appreciated

get some throttle body cleaner. Do a good job, that may very well help with the idle issue.

...or any vacuum leak in general! Will do this.
Smoke machines are a wonderful luxury.

Lacking one the other day, I resorted to that old trick I'd heard of once: with the engine running, start spraying throttle body cleaner around any vacuum lines you see. If the tone changes, and you'll hear it (to get an idea of what should happen, take off the airbox and spray some cleaner right into the throttle, that's the change in engine sound/performance that you'll hear when you find your vacuum leak), you found a leaky line. Upon closer inspection you'll probably find it cracked or torn or whatever; but spraying everything beats looking for fine cracks everywhere.

It really did work for me; at first I had some "false positives" not knowing what I was listening for, but finally I was spraying around the top cover of this lincoln suv and heard the engine accelerate in rpm and buck and surge, and sure enough, there was a partially dissolved and separated vacuum line!

The line going from the charcoal canister/ purge valve to under the upper intake plenum I've found cracking on every 302 I've seen: the fuel vapors eat it, after 20+ years, you see.
Historically I've heard that --'89 that the metal vacuum reservoir can likes to leak.
On a 90-91, where the hech is the vacuum reservoir? I can't find it. And once I've identified it, do they, too, have the reputation that 86-89 had with their metal soup cans?

my soup can doesn't leak, but my car is a southern car. It doesn't have any rust.

Have you checked the EGR vacuum solenoid? Just plug off the green line the goes to your egr valve and take your car for a ride. My car used to do the same thing, my vacuum solenoid is no good, so I just left it plugged.

I'd just go with all new vacuum lines. Trying to identify a bad one is pointless at this age. They are all old enough to vote, and I vote to replace them. If it hasn't seen a tuneup or a fuel filter in the last couple years, do that too.

I believe it is part of the fuse/relay box on the drivers side.

Sorry, I forgot to mention the plug wires have been changed before i bought it, I haven't checked the plugs though. And I have changed the fuel filter recently. And where is the EGR vacuum solenoid?

the EGR solenoid is located on the passenger inner fender with 2 other same looking suspects. Follow the vacuum line off the EGR valve back to it. That's the easiest way to find it.

I dont know how to check them, but every now and then the check engine light comes on. It never stays on for more than a few minutes though.
