Well i finally got around to changing the timing chain in the 84 and im glad i did because it was tore up pretty bad. I put a true double roller in and it seems like it helped with my engine miss and decel issues. But the only thing i have noticed with the new chain is when i start her up in the morning the engine light stays on for a few seconds and while the light is on the engine is making a lower end or a oil pump sound but only for like 3 seconds till the engine light turns off. Is there any way with the new chain being so tight that the oil pump is making the noise because the old one was so bad or do i need to check my timing maybe because the old tc was f&*% up bad and with the new one on the timing is now to high. Or is my oil pump going on its way out. Do any of you have the same noise. Thanks matt

I have that rattling diesel sound that is the 5.0 piston slap but it dosen't make any noise on startup. It takes 5-10 seconds for it to make the rattling noise. I only have 65 thousand miles though.
Your noise sounds like main bearing noise, especially if the engine light is staying on for a while. Do you have a oil pressure gauge?

did you change the oil and filter with the timing chain? Sounds like the filter has a leaky drainback valve and what you're hearing is the engine running with no oil flow as it fills the filter back up.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

Its only doing when it sits for a few hours or more. Yea gadget i didnt change the oil in her yet. Its only making the sound for like 3 seconds and the engine light glows on then wammm the sound and light turn off like the oil finally got pressured up. A good idea would be to put a pressure guage in her. I counted it today and i started her up a total of 9 times and it did it 2 times. thanks matt1984 mercury grand marquis ls rebuilt 306 flat top pistons with factory cfi and lincoln headers with single glasspack dual snorkle air cleaner. Change the oil. If you got any water in there while the cover was open, it will sit on the bottom of the pan, and the pump will suck that up first. Water is a really lousy lubricant.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).
