    Drivebility problems

I am having a problem with my car, and wondered if someone here could point me in the right direction...

When I drive it, if I am coasting, or just trying to maintain speed, it bucks, once every couple of seconds, randomly... (Another words, not that you could say the same time between the events... ) It runs like a champ when it is accelerating. The "bucking" seems like a dead miss, or like somone is taking the coil wire on and off, quickly, before the engine dies. I figured it needed a tuneup, so I did a complete tuneup, plugs, which had some wear, but not too much. Plug wires, found one that had gotten burned on the exhaust mainifold evidently, figured this was the source of the "miss" or what ever you want to call it. New cap, again, not too bad, but could stand changing, so I changed it out, along with the rotor button. When I test drove it, it seemed to run ok, at first, but when it warms up, it starts the bucking thing. I noticed on the way to work this morning the same thing.. for the first few blocks, it runs fine... then starts doing it. any help would be appreciated.. don't want to start the "change out parts" method to find the problem...

    I am figuring:
Distributor ignition pick up acting up
Electonic ignition module (On side of the distributor)
    coil

The distibutor and ignition module was changed out when we put the new engine in, about 3 years ago now...

    The coil is original equipment

I don't think it is a fuel problem, since it would act like it is choking down, and this is not that....
    Thanks for any ideas....

Any codes? Does the coil tower look questionable? a lot of the time when the coils start to fail, the tower gets all crusty and nasty and/or you'll see white or grey marks around the edges of the plastic bobbin where its arcing out. Usually you can see it glowing blue at night if you run the engine in the dark.

I think a member discribed a symptom like this and said it could be the map sensor vacuum hose. That it was collapsing under decel, high vacuum situations and replacing the vacuum hose helped it out...

          trwp72,
What year is your car? Several members are having very similar issues and are actively troubleshooting.

What happens if you disconnect the vacuum hose from your EGR valve? Have you attempted cleaning your EGR ports?

I replaced my Coil with an Accel unit a few years ago. It wasn't doing what you described, but it looked like hell and it had cobwebs/cacoons inside the plug. Plus the corrosion on the terminal ends and I decided to foot the $35 to get a decent coil. I don't know how to diagnose problems with a coil, but if it's stock like you said, it has been running for 20+ years.

I had this problem on previous 5.0's...the bucking upon decel and worse when warm ended up being my TPS sensor...it was a factory 1988 sensor and replaced it with a cheapo autozone sensor and the problem went away...that cheap junk only lasted about 2yrs.

                Good luck,

Turned out to be a clogged fuel injector... bottle of lucas injector cleaner, problem solved! Running a second bottle of sea foam in it this tank full... we will see...
