oil pan, main cap... and then you have access to the seal IIRC. I just add more oil to the car.

I changed the seal without lowering the pan. Lisle makes a tool for this. It basically is a tiny wire with a tiny clip. You feed the wire in, attach the seal and pull it through.

I do not remember how I did it as I did not have the tool. It was the first thing I ever did to the car. It was in 2000 or 2001. Bought it, jacked it up and did the seal as oil was slowly pouring out. It worked at least a few years untill the tranny died, then the LSC drivetrain went in.

Nah, you don't need to do any of that. Hell you don't even need to drain the oil. Just pull the tranny and flexplate and have at it.

Don't worry, the new one will leak soon enough anyways. They don't call them 5leakers for nothing.

What year did they go to the 1 piece? That one won't require the sneaky Pete tool for the rear main and can be removed/installed with simple brute force.

82 I believe, along with the imbalance change.

Are you positive its the rear main seal? The one piece seals seldom leak. Usually its the back of the intake that pisses oil out, and people blame it on the rear main.

yea im positive as i had the intake off last week and checked for oil everywhere on the back of the motor and found nothing till i got to the lower end of the block. i have a family friend that said he will change it for me so i might do that next Monday. She has been leaking for about 3 years now and has gotten worse since its been hotter out this past month and i stopped using 20w50 as it made the rockers more noisy so i put 10w40 to stop that noise but the seal leaks more now.Its leaking about a quart every 2 weeks. only thing is he's going to charge me 350 bucks which kinda sucks because i wanted to use that money for the a/c in the 84. I might just do it myself being that just the trans and flex plate come off and not the damn oil pan and what not and i still want to do the timing chain also to get rid of the hesitation and miss im getting. thanks matt

If worse come to worse and money is tight i can also sell the 5.0 ive been building for the past few years just for the cash but its always good to have a extra motor laying around just in case.

Not the valve covers either is it? Also seen valve covers leak at the back corner and be mistaken for a rear main leak, same with the oil pan gasket. Usually to really accurately diagnose a rear main seal leak, the splash pans have to come off the bottom of the trans bellhouse to check inside. If its a rear main seal, expect to see the oil weeping down between the block and the spacer, and possibly also slung around in there as it flies off the crankshaft.

I was thinking of the older engines that used seals similar to chebbys.

early ones had that rope seal like the early Chevy motors, which also changed sometime in the 80s. Those things are a pain in the ass to do in the car, usually with the oil pan and main cap unbolting, etc. The one piece ones you can yank out and drive in a replacement without taking anything else apart. It usually won't even leak unless you scratch the crankshaft.
