    84 stalling

the 84 gm has been running great this last week but while sitting in traffic today it keep stalling on me. it would be running fine then out of no where blaa and dies. its cold out and was running at 190. i had to kinda keep my foot on it till traffic got moving again and it didnt do it again. it died like 3 times in a 4 minute period. i got home and checked for codes but got an 11 all good. did a koer and the only thing i got back was a 44 for the smog being taken off. while it was running i aslo wiggled all the cfi wirng and what not with no change to idle rpm. the only thing aparant was the actual negative wire cable was loose where it it gets clamped to the terminal connector. you guys think it was the negative causing this? or could fuel pressure be a culpret?

Well I think the car would run without the battery if the alternator is good and you did not have alot of drain going on at idle. If the drain exceeded the output then I think she would just stop. Though since apparently it cranked over after stalling I would not bet on the battery cable as being the source of the problem. But hey I have been wrong before and maybe you will be lucky and that is that.

The negative wire cable was loose on my '83 MK VI last week. The car didn't stall but it did hesitate when starting.

Maybe it's your injectors. You could put some marvel mystery oil in the gas tank, or chevron injector cleaner and see if that helps it out. You could also check your injectors at idle with a timing light and observe their spray pattern.

welll guys i thinks it was the new tps i got. luckly i had an extra one that is a motorcraft part from the junk yard. put it on and i think its better. the car runs smoother and there is not yet at least no idle up and down and bla dies issue during traffic. i did notice that my idle does seem a little low compared to my original tps that went haywire a few weeks ago. im still getting about 16 to 17 mpgs which is still way better than the 12 when got her. thanks matt

Better MPG's just by changing the TPS??? Not doubting you - just curious.

oh no this was years ago when i got 12 mpgs. the car is a 180 from what it was to now. 17 mpgs half city half intersate so im sure it can be around 19 with 100 percent interstate driving. i was getting 12 with the timing at 5 deg and the motor completly stock with 190k about 10 years ago.
