    best spark plug?

i recently changed the plugs in the 86 and 84 and i used the copper core autolights. the gas milage has drop dramatic went from 20 mpgs in the 86 to 17 and the 84 got about 17 and is now 15 to 16 mpgs. we both drive just to work and the same route for years now. the plugs i put in last time where the boush platniums. is this possible that my 5.0s dont like autolights and if so what plug do your guys 5.0s like. thanks matt

I'd say something else changed, or you have bad plugs (individually). Copper autolites are the go-to here.

I've never had any luck with autolites personally. I think they are getting junky. I use NGK whenever possible.

ive always used motorcraft for fords but my parst store didnt have them at the time. however they do still have ac delco r45ts. i know those are awsome plugs in a chevy but never used them in a ford. i do have a set of old champions in there original boxes that i never used that was for another project. its not pressure as i check the tires daily and the ecus anrnt throughing any codes eiather. the 86 with sefi always got good milage around 20 to 22. the 84 with the cfi has always no matter what been at 17. yesterday i installed the lincoln logs headers on the 84 so we will see if that helps any. i noticed the lincoln headers added more depth in exhuast tone and little more grunt on the bottom end. also i noticed that the cats on the 86 where looking pretty bad. even the pre cats. i dont have emissions for these cars and wont in the for seeable future eaither. would it be a good idea be to take the cats out?

            I use motorcrafts.

            1. because there recommended

            2. because there cheaper at my local auto parts store than autolites or NGK's

              autolite plugs

When I changed the plugs in my '81 ltd, I put in autolite platums in. Never had and trouble over the years with these plugs. The plugs I took out were motorcraft, and judging how they looked, were the originals from '81

Used to use regular Autolites till I got a bad batch. This was just after they moved production to China. I had random misfires and it sucked more fuel than normal. Since then its been Motorcraft. They are Hecho en Mexico.

I switched to E3's on my 351W to see if they lived up to all the advertising....in my experience they are worth every penny. I used to run autolites before production moved to China...we've noticed all sorts of comebacks at work due to the use of autolites....car runs fine after plugs and halfway back to the shop it'll develop a misfire, replaced plugs and it's fine...we even had an Acura 3.2 that would put up misfire codes but you could never feel 'em...that car just wasn't happy until we put NGK's in it.

If you can't justify the $20-25 for 8 Diamondfire E3's, then I would definitely suggest motorcraft.

                  Good luck,
                  Don

i run bosch platinums....work good...last a long time...use lots of em....i do suggest a god HOT coil if using platinum plugs however....msd streetfire works great...and a GOOD set of wires...(i like ford racing 8.8mm...in red..matches the msd coil and cap....lol)

Got the Bosch Plats in my '87 along with OEM Cap, Rotor and Wires. The '95 has Motorcraft plugs along with OEM wires. No problems!

I've always used Bosch iridiums or platinums and no problems. However I put Motorcraft in my lincoln and they are fine as well. Only had bad experiences with auto lite, champion sucks too.

Next time I put plugs in my 85 I'm getting E3's.
