I actually removed my electric and put the fan clutch back on. It was more hassle than it was worth I think, and as infrequently as you actually need to mess with the fan clutch I didn't really find much point in it.

If I install one, I'm not going to bother with wiring it to come on automatically when the coolant reaches xxx temp. Just gonna run it off of a relay with a little toggle up on the dash.

I was joking about doing it just to avoid the 4 11mm bolts.
The principle issue I had was that with a mark viii fan, and even with a pa performance alternator (unless they're no good?), when that fan kicked on at idle, my engine stalled out.
A capacitor fixed the issue. But $60 in fan and $150 in electrical work later, now I have an electric fan of dubious benefit. And whenever I unhook the battery, I need to use a resistor where the capacitor fuse is to charge up the capacitor gently, or i just blow the fuse (and then no cooling fan functionality).

mine wouldn't stall, but the lights got noticeably dimmer when it kicked on. The god awful amount of noise it made was also an annoyance. The car sounded like a friggin leaf blower whenever that fan came on. A big cap probably could have helped the flicker problem but honestly I was just done with it at that point. My clutch fan is silent, the temperature runs rock solid, and it doesn't do funny things to the electrical system. I'm good with that.

yeah, the belt just wasn't tight enough. cranked the bejesus out of the belt and the pulley didn't move at all when i backed the bolts out of the WP and took the fan/pulley off. onward to camshaftery.

It looks like I might not even need to take the grille off to get the cam in there with the radiator and junk out of the way....but I didn't actually check, just eyeballed it

picture another engine length in front of your engine. That's about the minimum clearance you need to slide that bitch out of there...

That's what I did. If it doesn't fit, it's pretty close. I'll measure that bitch up tomorrow when I get home from school.

can anyone actually verify whether or not an 88-91 style box needs the grille removed to get the cam out of the block with the motor in the car?

Removing the grille can't be that much of a pain. It's only some phillips screws or torx bits...

*shouldnt* be that much of a pain. i couldn't get any clips out and didn't wanna force it. anyone know how many of what fasteners are there? i don't wanna miss any and crack the grille when i'm trying to get it out of there.
