New, with issues

I just recently bought a 91 mgm, the car looks pretty good other than some faded paint, and the front seats a little worn out.

Issue 1 is the car runs great, can barely hear it run, but on the way home after buying it, once it warmed up it idled a little rough, like it wanted to stall. If i just as much as rested my foot on the gas, it cleared up. i did buy some injector cleaner, along with a spray bottle of injector/carb cleaner. i sprayed some cleaner in this morning while it was running, i did it a few times. Maybe thatll help.

Issue 2, this also happened on the way home, and this morning. I had the hood up while it was running, and all of a sudden i start seeing what looked like smoke coming from the rear bottom passenger side of the engine compartment. I think it was oil leaking onto the cat, but it cleared up within a minute or so. Temp of the car never went up, so i dont think it was water. (yea its got some type of oil leak)

issue 3, while driving the car seems just kinda fishy when shifting gears. when taking off from a dead stop, the car shifts fine through all the gears. its just when slowing down, it feels like i can feel the car downshift. doesnt seem normal to me.


i really like the car, and im excited to finally have another panther (i used to have an 85 TC that i loved) i just really hope i didnt buy someone else's problem. any input would be appreciated.

1 - Could just be the idle controller or TPS sensor, if it runs good otherwise its not a big deal.

2 - probably just a drip of oil from leaky valve cover gaskets burning off the exhaust manifold. Do you tinker? its not a terrible job, but not for the beginner either.

3 - As long as it up-shifts fine and you don't feel like its in 'neutral' between gears I also wouldn't worry. especially OD to D, we all feel that one, lol

The AOD downshift is normal.. My 85 Grand Marquis had a pretty noticeable one Haha

Thanks for the replies so far. It puts my mind at ease a little. Yea i tinker, i can do most of the basics, i've helped with motor swaps quite a few times too.

1. and 3. could be fuel injectors i had the same problem for 7 months when i finish replacing everything it still was there so i decided to replace the fuel filter and notice it was dirty so i decided to pull each fuel injector to clean and after that all was good hope this help

Was the car sitting for awhile before you bought it?

Maybe a two weeks or so, not long. I bought it from a little car dealership. The guy that had it before me owned it for 8 years, and traded it in on an 03 GM. I remember a couple years ago i owned a bronco II that would run rough after it warmed up, and it would eventually stall. After i changed the fuel filter it stopped doing that.

Im the original poster, i have way too many passwords, and forgot some. Long story short, here i am.

The car was a little bit low on trans fluid, i added some and it seemed to help, but its still got that jerk going in/out of OD. I brought it to a trans shop and had a guy drive it, he said its nothing he would worry too much about, but in the future it may need some attention.

The running problem is gone, it turned out to be the TPS. Got a new one and it runs great now.

The smoking issue turned out to be the heater core. I figured that out after having antifreeze smelling air blowing in my face. Its only bypassed for now, but at least its somewhat fixed.

is the trans leaking?? tail shaft possibly?? make sure to check every now and then... and just keep her full

if a heater core on a '91 is like a an '84, you have your whole weekend planned.

I think it does have a small leak because the pan does look wet, but i havent seen any drops on the driveway.

And yea, i think the heater core is behind the dash. I live in florida though, it doesnt get cold very often here, and i have a little heater that plugs in the cigarette lighter that i can use if i have to. So im sure it will stay bypassed for quite a while.
