    should be in off topic...

interesting noise... almost sounds like a loose engine mount. Though I might investigate in cams and see if any of the cam towers/braces are cracked.

What engine does it have? There's a few other guys here that know more about mopar stuff than I do.

My fist guess would be something in the alternator or maybe having to do with the crankshaft pulley area, maybe something in or near the timing belt.

But why not use a mechanics stethoscope to pin point the problem more accurately. You can "borrow" one at Advance and Auto Zone parts stores with a deposit. Those things work great!!

Sorry, I could not find the Off topic area. The engine is a 3.3 liter from 2003. I will check the motor mounts tomorrow. I remember the 70's cars with a bad motor mount would have the radiator fan hitting the fan shroud. Almost sounds the same. This sounds like it is coming from the engine itself. Almost like the starter may be re-engaging upon shut down even though the flywheel looked good when removing the inspection plate. The starter would be on the back of the engine though. The sound seems to come from the front of the engine which is the passenger side. The 3.3 is mounted sideways in theGrand Caravan.

          Thanks again.

Best bet is to get a stethoscope and buy your assistant a few beers. I have no fucking clue what that sound could be but there are only so many moving parts at that end of the motor.

I work on quite a few of these at my job. What you are hearing is the " clutch " in the alternator. It is not a problem per se, but it is annoying as hell. Damned if we know why Mopar designed them like that. It doesn't make any sense to us. We just replace the alternator, as a lot of our group home employees are always complaining about the noise. You try to tell these Hyundai driving idiots that it's normal for these vans, and they look at you like you have two heads.

absolutely normal Mopar alternator OAD pulley decoupler clutch.
                "clank-clunk" on turn off=normal
"clank-clunk-screech" on turn off=replace the alternator.

under rapid deceleration the alternator freewheels and after a while it clanks when the belt stops complety before the alt spins down as the pulley relocks.

You know the car runs well when the only things left to work on are the rear door cigarette lighters.

Thank you PICKUP6772 and bigbeigeboat. Than makes it the third time I heard this. I am sure you guys are correct. I am gonna tell my wife to drive it until it squeals. My thanks again and my thanks to everyone on the board. I belong to a few other forums/websites. The best mechanics are here in GMN!
