    momentary oil pressure loss; reassurances?

I think it's all OK, and I'm just fretting over nothing.

Did a stupid, noob thing the other night. I did an oil change in my driveway on my GM, and a power steering flush too. I noticed that the red check engine light was on for a couple seconds longer than normal on startup when I went to test the power steering and turned the wheel back and forth, but the light went out, and I didn't see any fluids dumping so I figured what the hell.
The next morning I go to leave for work, and as I'm backing out of the driveway and turning on to the street, the red check engine light flickers and stays on. I notice oil has dumped all over the driveway, and shut the car off immediately (so it ran dry several seconds and no more).

I found that the old oil filter had left its gasket stuck to the block, and was double-gasketed. Stupid noob mistake not to check for it I know, but I've been working for sears for 8 months now and NEVER seen this happen, nor did anyone ever warn me that it could, so I never thought to check!

I have not put any miles on the car since the incident, though I did drive it back into my driveway after removing the extra gasket and refilling, and it didn't make any noise for that tenth of a mile.
Engine's probably OK? Only run completely dry, for just seconds?

I used a filter wrench to pull the filter (I was in a panicked rush, and not patient enough to wrestle it off), and reinstalled, so the can is dented a little but not punctured. OK to use this filter for 3,000 miles, or would you put a fresh filter on?

Since it was only for a few seconds i would say you are most likely ok. It's just good that you caught it that fast. And as long as you aren't racing your GM or beating on it and the oil filter isn't horribly crushed you should be fine running it as is. There is the possibility that some slight wear occurred (and probably did) however not enough to really matter. Just keep a lookout for any noises, just in case.

Don't worry about the noob mistake, I've never done it but i've heard of a lots of people who have, some who have been in the business for years. At least this way you'll always double check the gaskets!

Probably didm't run long enough, with no oil to create an issue. As for the filter, as long as the case is fairly well intact, shouldn't be an issue. If it really bugs you - you can always replace it and another qt. of oil.

I think you're fine. I'd put another filter on just for the hell of it, $3-5 at the most.

Every time you change your oil you run the engine for a second or two on start up with little to no oil on everything. You should be fine.

                    you will be fine

i changed the oil on skips daughters mitsubishi a few yrs ago and i must have gotten distracted and did not make the oil drain plug tight enough.......she called us an hr later said her oil light had been on for 10 min and she drove another 10 min before she stoped somewhere, we were on the phone with her pleading to stop immediately..........anyway when i got to her car there was no oil and no drain plug, not even any oil dripping out the pan lol.......i got a drain plug and oil and filed it up and started it and it clattered for about 30 sec then got quiet.....i got lucky!

my sons grandfather worked for honda, he told me once he forgot to put oil in a newer accord.......customer drove to the other honda dealer with no oil (35 miles) that one lived too hehe

Sounds like your fine. Next time you put a new filter on you can fill it up with oil before you put it on... something I like to do when I do an oil change. Merry Christmas!
