    Motorin'

    Hi guys.

I was wondering whether I'd be able to just go with a bigger engine than the 351 Windsor I currently have, without having to change the transmission.

    Could I go to a 460cid?

The 460 will fit but you'll also need the proper transmission (3-spd/C6) mounts and most likely the 9" rear. Are there any good junkyards near you?

The biggest drop-in motor for one of these is a 351w. A 460 would certainly work but it would not be as easy as your 351w, imo....and with an AOD you couldn't use a 460. Not without an adapter at least.

A 460 in just about any stock form is a dogshit motor and makes barely more power than either the 302 or 351 in a Panther. Lots of cubic inches but nothing can get in there to fill them without redoing the top end of the motor.

A 351w block can be taken out as far as 427 cid. Check out www.fordstrokers.com if you are thinking about doing major engine overhauling...might be more economical to get a complete motor from them than to rebuild your 351w to stock specs, or to drop a 385 series (of which the 460 belongs) in

Not much differance in HP but big differance in torq. Dosent take much to get some big HP and even bigger torq out put with a 460.
Betting my truck puts out about 500 HP and 500 lbs of torq its not very radical.

          What they said.

If you're rebuilding anyway you can buy a 'stroker kit' and get at least 408ci reliably with no external changes at all.

There are 3 things that can have an affect on the displacement itself.

1 - number of cylinders...can't really change that.

2 - cylinder bore = diameter between the cylinder walls. this can be enlarged (bored out) for either rebuilding or power gain purposes..but you're really not going to get HUGE gains just by boring out a motor. a 351 bored .030" over is only 357 cubic inches, however...

3 - stroke = the distance the piston travels from BDC (bottom dead center) all the way to TDC (top dead center). you can very easily change the stroke in almost any engine.

A stroker kit would include the parts required to make your motor a stroker. New crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons/rings/pins etc etc etc (many parts I did not list)

              A 351 engine has a 3.5" stroke with a 4" bore.

On the same 351 motor, a 4" stroke would bring you to 402 cubic inches. A 4.25" stroke gives you a 427 cubic inch motor

Hey I made a 4 cyl into a 5 cyl , a v8 into a V10 and a V8 into a v12. Just some cutting and welding. A custom crank. A V10 is 4.6 wit h2 more cyl how do you think we did the first one at Ford.
