    Cooling System Question

    Hi All!

I have a 1987 Mercury Grand Marquis in nearly mint condition. The major problem I see is the Heater Core. It was bypassed a few years ago (no major leaks but slightly foggy windshield) and today I decided to reconnect it. Flushed it out, carefully, then reconnected the hoses. Can't find a leak at the core tubes but saw a leak right above the Cat converter. I would think a core leak would be INSIDE the vehicle. Both heater hoses are hot but no heat (vacuum issue) which I need to trace out but more concerned about the leak. Any likely suspects??? Thanks....Bobby

right above the converter could be the AC/heater core drain...

The heater cores don't always leak enough to see. Just enough to fog up the windshield and stink.

Replacing that heater core I know looks like hell on earth, but it's not. I've already replaced a few and I found out that there was nothing to fear but fear itself.

Just make sure you get a good one!! The ones I've seen at Autozone, Advanced and Napa are all the same and they are junk. I wen't with a Ford part and it was exactly like the core that came out.

It's just not worth it to do this job with inferior parts, it might be that hard. But you definitely don't want to do it twice.

Evap drain sounds about right. If that is so, then the core is leaking worse than I thought. Any options besides replacement (not a good option, at this point) or bypass? Bobby

Just bypass it again. If it is leaking there is no fix for it besides replacing it with a new one.

or if it's copper and has the classic pipe insert cracks... remove... re-solder... replace. I saved my heater core since that's the issue it had. Planning to re slobber it some time.
