The Beginning of My CFI To SEFI Conversion

So i am starting to get a hand of EEC-IV stuff. since my block is not roller compatible(i think) i am going to have to swap the whole engine. My new swap engine will be from a 1990 Lincoln Town Car with mass air flow and a 5.0 SEFI. I can get the whole engine for $125. so today i started pickign at it got the EEC-IV ECU out and the mass air flow. also got off the throttle body(Do i need the throttle linkages to, if so how to remove them). Tommorow going to continue tearing the engine down. this lincoln has the tubular logs for the exhaust manifolds so i am pulling them off too. Gonna fish the whole wiring harness off too. Anything else i should get from it. I was gonna get an exploder motor but it was EEC-V so i wouldn't think it would work in my car as the plenum faces toward the opposite of the town car 5.0. to get more horsepower out of the motor what parts should i take from the exploder to make it HO.

List of stuff i have gotten so far.

    Mass Air Flow System
    EEC-IV ECU
    Throttle Body

you found a 90 towncar with mass air? Never seen one of those before. Must be a California car. Honestly I wouldn't want the Towncar mass air stuff. If its the same sensor as the 91 Cali Vic uses, its teeny-tiny and the ECM is not really useful for any sort of performance. You'd be better off using that wiring harness, a later MAF, and a Mustang ECM to convert the Explorer motor. Should all be plug and pray.

You convert the Explorer motor to EEC4. The intake reverses and you throw out the 90 degree elbow. Or you figure out how to do eec5. Go with the Explorer motor if you're swapping engines. 90 Towncar motor is good for all of 160 hp with dual exhaust. A dead stock Explorer motor should be easily good for 230 or better with the same exhaust system. You want the fuel rail and distributor from the 90 Towncar, everything else should be Explorer.

are the exploder motor mount's the same as my existing one will it bolt right up.. so maybe i can run EEC-V in my grand marquis that would be a first. i have the EEC V ECU from the exploder and maybe it will work on the gm. EEC V is better than EEC IV. Also if i were to use EEC-IV on the exploder motor what car should i take the EEC IV harness out of. also what exhaust manifolds are better the exploders or the lincoln logs on the 1990 tc. i will take the exploder motor apart then anything else i should grab to make it a mad powerhouse. the exploder was built in 08/1996 does that make it a 1997 and would it have the GT40P heads.

Look at the VECI sticker. If it says something along the lines of 'Conforms to emissions standards for model year 1997' it's a '97 model. Early '97s have the internal egr ports, and may or may not have GT40p heads. Mine had P heads but mine was made october of '96.
The lincoln logs are better, and will bolt to your stock exhaust. You will need 90 degree spark plug boots for cylinders 5 and 6 and spark plug wire insulators for cylinders 5, 6, and 7. You'll need to do some kind of modification to access the spark plugs for cylinders 5 and 6 and possibly 7 as well. Not sure. All I know is I can't access my cylinder 5 and 6 plugs with a spark plug socket or wrench. Lol.

EEC-V is OBD-II This would be better if you could get an explorer tone ring to work on a panther harmonic balancer. I've actually, suprisingly, recently seen one. So it's a matter of how much money you got. I hear it's not cheap...

EEC-IV you'd need to change the town car harness around I think. It's wired differently. If you're going mass air I'd recommend an A9P from a automatic mustang, use the 1990 towncar harness (its set up the same as mass air, but there is no mass air sensor (unless you're in california, but I'd stay the fuck away from that!

If sticking with speed density, you'd be better off with a box vic of grand marquis harness (I have that for you... I also have a Mark VII computer).

Explorer harness will not work since the EEC-V computers have a different number of pins.

If you decide to get explorer engine, know that you will need a bunch of stuff from Boxes. Timing cover from a box, harmonic balancer from a box, water pump, SEFI fuel rail from a box. You will need to keep EGR functional because you're in an emissions county, so you're gonna need to either find lightning 351 egr spacer, or bore out a mustang spacer and have bracket added to allow you to fit your stock throttle bracketry on there.

sounds like to much work i will just stick to an EFI 1989 grand marquis motor with lincoln logs.

its almost the same work to do an explorer motor with eec iv as it is to do an 89 grand marq motor. The difference is an oil pan and timing cover swap on the Explorer engine, and another 75 or so hp from the Explorer motor. For 75 hp, I'll swap the pan and cover. Thats a cake job, relatively speaking.

All the shit that has to be changed on the explorer has to come off anyway. I personally wouldn't throw a junkyard motor directly in the car. i'd want to go over it. even my running engine from the explorer needed stuff. At the least it needed main and rod bearings. It probably could've just been honed, reringed, timing kit and that would be that for the block. heads need guide liners, valve job, maybe new valves. definitely new valve springs. new core plugs. that would cover the heads.

There is no more free. That engine has other plans. You didn't take it when I offered it to you. Sorry.
