    89 vic TPS issues

    ok guys had a issue with my TPS like two weeks ago put a new one on ran great for about two days then started run like crap on the top end. by the way its a 89 vic with a t-5 swap. so i ran my codes again on it and before i had a TPS code now im getting code 12 cannot control rpm during er self test high. not sure what i need to do the car will run just wont run good in high gears. ran perfect for the first two days though. also i want to ad i went to autozone to buy the part they had two diffrent ones available so i bought the one three $ more but they looked the same just diffrent numbers on them. im wondering if i needed the other or i was thinking can i use a tps sensor for a mustang with a t-5 or does it not matter between auto and manual.

    cant control rpm high is usually either the IAC is stuck open, or you have a vacuum leak. TPS sensors are TPS sensors really. Basically every Ford from about 1985-1995 or so used the same part. I've run Mustang sensors on my Towncar, and I think my Mark VII may have one from a Vic on it currently.

      When mine was failing I just unplugged it until I could get a new one. Mine wasn't starting unless I would hold it to the floor. I unhooked the tps and it started up normal and ran normal. So maybe try to unplug it and see how it runs.

        the TPS is more like an accel pump. i dont know what else to compare it to. so, unplugging it wont really hurt the engine.

          what is the IAC? where is it located at. ya i will have to take a look at it this code 12 came up after the new tps was put in. the car has a bad hitch to it in the high rpm falls on its face and jerks.

            Sounds like iac or possibly a stuck open egr if you're still equipped. The iac is a cylinder shaped thingy mounted diagonally around the throttle body. I'll see if I can find a pic in a bit.

                ok nice i know what that is now. i was going to unbolt my throttle body and clean everything out. do those go totally bad or will a good cleaning get everything back in order.

                  Sometimes they just get stuck and can be cleaned. I'd try that first. The aftermarket ones don't always work right.

                    Do that, clean the throttle body and whatnot. If it's covered in oil, I'd recommend you change the PCV valve and screen, since that's probably why it got all crapped up in the first place.

                      just waiting on buying the gaskets for everything to clean her out. but one thing im wondering is this code was never thrown untill i changed the tps.. but i did unplug it for a bit to see if it ran diffrent and it still did the same thing. so time to clean out the throttle body.. is there anyway to block off the egr on these cheaply without making the computer mess up on the mixture?

                        Blocking the EGR is easy, but you may get EGR codes by doing that. To do it, simply pull the vacuum line off of the EGR valve and plug the line. You don't need to cap the EGR valve itself.
