Exhaust leak? Valvetrain? Other thoughts?

my '99 mustang sounds exactly like that. im pretty sure the timing chain tensioner failed completely and the chain is smacking the front cover. obviously that cant be your problem, though.

do you have sequentials?

I have no idea what the sound could possibly be, but it idles nice for being dormant for that long.

But.... poo. I tried to use a hose up to my ear and try to direct sound to it and isolate where the noise was coming from but no luck this time.

does it go away after it warms up? if you use a vacuum line to hear exactly where the noise is coming from that'll be helpful..

I do have sequential tail lights. They were a CHristmas present one year from the parents, put in the mercury. THen I bought the Impala (shown briefly in this video to jump start), and put them in there instead since the parents made me store the Mercury. So currently the blink blinks are in the chevy... but I plan to buy another set and put them back in the merc.

I did use a hose and listen to try to isolate but couldn't find it. I didn't let it run long enough to reach NOT though, I had to run off to a bachelor party. Next chance I get I'll let it actually warm up and see how/if the sound changes.

Sounds just like my lifter tick... one is probably stuck from sitting. It may work itself free with some clean oil, if not, up to you if you want to try engine cleaners...!

sounds alot like when djs car before we found out he accidently douple sealed his oil filter and ran the oil out of it try changing oil and see if that hepls.

Sounds to be an exhaust manifold leaking. I would think if it where a dead lifter it would also be running rough on that cylinder, since one of the valves would not be functioning properly.

If it's a lifter, try some marvels mystery oil. I have an old y-block ford with a terrible tick in it. Adding some marvels makes it nearly inaudible.

You did pull off the accessory belts to make sure of whether or not the sound is internal, right? No point losing sleep over ticking accessories.

Sounds like an exhaust leak, sounds like the Mark VII that we were working on last weekend, had an exhaust leak sounded just like that, we thought it was a valvetrain noise, but a hose told us otherwise.
