Engine computer died

88 mgm engine computer let the magic smoke out.

Died on me on the way home today... waited a few... cranked back up and I drove home. Go out and test it... pulls code 18. Tach signal lost? wtf?

hmm... do a koer test... engine starts to rev up (advance progressing) and then just dies. Try to crank it again and nothing.

engine computer case is too hot to touch. Try a koeo test to pull codes... nothing. no response. anything I should check besides the computer?

Fuel pump comes on and stays on now with the key on. all accessories work fine.

ummm, yeah that sounds like the ecm. Not common, but they are 20+ years old now.

yeah... pulled the ECM. it reeks of burnt PCB. too bad I don't have a socket that fits the baby hex screws on this thing. I'd like to take pictures (not like the warranty sticker is any good now).

And yes... I want the ECM... how much? I'll drive the Mark 6 for a few days... only problem is there's no covered parking at work.

If that means anything. I'm not up on the computer variances.

found a socket that worked on those screws (E6 star socket for a hex screw... go fig... but it worked)

looks like the capacitor took a dump... one lead was broken off at the board and the guts half blown out the bottom. it may have been a voltage regulator along the side attached to the case that went wonky... could have been any of the surrounding resistors shorted out... could have been a lot of things. maybe I should test my coil to make sure it's not back feeding the system.

Mine is out of an 88 towncar... '8KH'... the part number is the same except the last 4 digits read 'AC1A'

It should work fine in yours... Im not aware of them getting different running programming between F-L-M

How's $30 shipped sound? ECMs are $25 at my yard so if I ever need one that's what it'd cost me, if they have one there.
Scott might have a whole pile of stock ECM's at his place he might sell for cheaper, but I can get this one out tomorrow so it should be there by Saturday

E7SF-AEB, E7SF-AEC, E8SF-AEA seem to be the compatible ones. Looks like Lincolns got a different program. Only 88-91 GM and CV seem to have the compatible ones from what my searches are bringing up.

looks like that one would work for another breed of 5.0L that used any of these: E7SF-ACB, E7SF-ACC, E8SF-ACA, E8SF-YA, F0PF-BA

I do want to know that it will work before I get it. Otherwise I'll hand my dead one over to the Oreilly and fork over $80 for a Cardone reman. Then I know it'll work. I think I'll wait and see if Scott has one.

This just means I get to drive the Mark VI this week. Oh darn! :p

it'll work. They're not really all that picky. 88+ lopo ecms are all more or less the same.


The cap most likely leaked out and then shorted internally. This is what happens to old amplifiers and other electronics. The magic juice leaks and kablamo, dead expensive part because a $0.50 component crapped out.
