Ive done it 8 times, and it can be done without removing the engine. Just be very careful getting the rear of the gasket past the pickup and you will be safe

wow i wish i could do that to mine but i have to have enough space to scrape my old gasket off. It's as flat as a pancake on there. Plus i want to clean and repaint my oil pan so i have to raise the engine up.

When you do jack the engine up, go for the bellhousing area when positioning the jack after the exhaust is unbolted. None of the front end accessories have to be removed just take the 2 bolts out of the fan shroud. Removing the upper intake plenum might be helpful also, but depending on how high you get the engine you might have to take the pickup off which would require a 9/16th wrench and a 1/2 inch socket on a 3/8 drive ratchet with a short extension.

how do you "secure" the engine once it's jacked up? Leaving it just with a jack on the bellhousing sounds like a recipe for breaking something or losing a finger. I assume this is all meant to be done sans-enginecrane

where else can you put the jack? it cant go on the oil pan you just have to get creative with it. The blocks of wood are helpful too but I don't use them

It may not be worthwhile in all cases, but I've seen a doohickey that sits on the inner fender lips and lifts the engine that way. Forget what it's called, though - I want to say Harbor Freight sells one, but if I actually said that someone would probably prove me wrong and then I'd be embarrassed.

If you have an overhead chainfall or something to attach a come-along to, you can just hook the engine to that. A cherry picker seems like a good idea, but the legs are right in your way so it doesn't come out so good.
