    blue smoke, what's it mean?

    Lots of blue smoke out the tailpipe on the '85. What does blue mean? When I changed valve cover gaskets tonight I found A LOT of gunk on the inside of the covers.

    Burning oil, not a good sign at all. Engine is mostly shot.

        probably valve seals.........drive it a bit.......remember it was sitting a while not being driven much........change the oil. and use a qt of lucas oil treatment....wouldnt worry about it much, unless it's burning tons of oil (more than a qt every 400-500 mi......my towncar burned that much till i replaced the engine.......ran fine tho.......you must remember justin, the car is 20 yrs old

          I agree, if it's not burnning too much, and even if it is, keep oil in it and she'll keep gettin down the road. At the price you payed though, I'd keep it going and drive it till it gives, which could be quite a long time.

            I changed oil tonight as well. It was going to get a new fuel filter tomorrow, but fuck it. No more money is going in this goddamn car. I know it's old and I probably was an idiot for buying it. I should have put the money in the '88.

            FUCK!!

            She sputters and cuts out so damn bad, too. Fuck.

              Keep a few sets of motorcraft 22c's around, and run thick oil with lucas...

              And keep driving it.. It will survive to make a good winter beater...

                Check the PCV valve too. Make sure it rattles when you shake it. If it doesnt, it could actually be sucking oil right out of the valve covers.

                    blue = oil

                    white = water i.e.: headgasket

                    black = fuel

                    Puffs of blue on startup is usually valve seals. They arent too bad as they only require rebuilt heads. If there's constant blue out the pipes usually means the rings are goin south. If the pcv pops out or there is excessive oil there, too much crankcase pressure from bad rings. Either of those two and you have a engine rebuild in your near future

                      The blue smoke shows on startup and when I get on the gas. The engine idles nice and smooth.

                      Maybe I'll try the thicker oil and lucas treatment and go from there. I hate to ditch this car 'cause everything else is in nice shape.

                        Eric had the same problem with his car. try just going with a bottle of lucas on the next change. Thicker oil probably wouldnt do as much to help as the lucas

                          a little smoke is casual. especially on startup. if it runs good, and gets you around, and wont get you a ticket, dont worry too much about it. you could be like me, and have to put a quart in once a week due to burning/leaking/spraying out of the dipstick tube. i dont change my oil, just my filter

                            its most likely the valve stem seals. My car sat for while too before I got it and it smoked once I started driving it. the valve stem seals were hard as rocks.

                            the 306 I installed started smoking too. Appearently there is a tool needed to seat the new valve stem seals when you install them. so the new valve stem seals were not installed properly on the heads and the seals were smashed into several pieces.

                              Does that Lucas oil treatment go in with the oil after an oil change, or is it something like SeaFoam where you have to add it, then change oil? I picked up bottle of Lucas today. How much should I add to the oil?
