Lots of blue smoke out the tailpipe on the '85. What does blue mean? When I changed valve cover gaskets tonight I found A LOT of gunk on the inside of the covers.

probably valve seals.........drive it a bit.......remember it was sitting a while not being driven much........change the oil. and use a qt of lucas oil treatment....wouldnt worry about it much, unless it's burning tons of oil (more than a qt every 400-500 mi......my towncar burned that much till i replaced the engine.......ran fine tho.......you must remember justin, the car is 20 yrs old

Check the PCV valve too. Make sure it rattles when you shake it. If it doesnt, it could actually be sucking oil right out of the valve covers.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

blue = oil
white = water i.e.: headgasket
black = fuel
Puffs of blue on startup is usually valve seals. They arent too bad as they only require rebuilt heads. If there's constant blue out the pipes usually means the rings are goin south. If the pcv pops out or there is excessive oil there, too much crankcase pressure from bad rings. Either of those two and you have a engine rebuild in your near future

Eric had the same problem with his car. try just going with a bottle of lucas on the next change. Thicker oil probably wouldnt do as much to help as the lucas

a little smoke is casual. especially on startup. if it runs good, and gets you around, and wont get you a ticket, dont worry too much about it. you could be like me, and have to put a quart in once a week due to burning/leaking/spraying out of the dipstick tube. i dont change my oil, just my filter

its most likely the valve stem seals. My car sat for while too before I got it and it smoked once I started driving it. the valve stem seals were hard as rocks.
the 306 I installed started smoking too. Appearently there is a tool needed to seat the new valve stem seals when you install them. so the new valve stem seals were not installed properly on the heads and the seals were smashed into several pieces.
