Question about smog pump and cats...

Ok so here is the deal, and I know I may sound like a retarded redneck, but please just play ball for a while.

First question... are the cats just bolted up under there? Yeah I know I could look but I am lazy. I assume, and we know what that does, that they are not welded in. The only aftermarket work on my exhaust is after the cats, so it should all be stock on the engine end.

Second question.... If I take them off, and bang out the internals, will this trip any codes? I assume it will because of O2 sensors?

Third question... If it does trip codes, and I clear them, will they keep tripping the check engine light? I only want to have to clear them once.

I will leave the smog pump on till it seizes.. then I will deal with taking it off and getting a delete pully and what not. I only need to pass a visual inspection on the exhaust/emissions... so that is not an issue. I only want to do this really to make the exhaust louder and free up a bit of hp, these things are nasty, and honestly probably about rusted through, so I may have to replace them with straight pipe and those "shells" that look like cats somebody posted on here a while ago. I do not have the money to pay for 4 new cats and installation.

Thanks for putting up with my retardism..... I much appreciate it.

The 02 sensors are in the stock manifolds, upstream of everything in the exhaust. You could put an elephant on there instead of a muffler and it wouldn't care.

    They are bolted in

Ok so there are not any after... I know some vehicles have them before and after to monitor the fuel mixture.. that is MAF I believe though... Just worried about any codes that might occur, the smog pump will stay running though.

Alright.. thanks, will it help if I run straight pipe through them to eliminate this hollow sound? I don't want it to sound like shit, Ill just leave it if it will.

yea, but you would need to cut the cats off, put pipe thru them, then weld the pipe to the cars and weld the cats back to the pipes

You don't need a delete pulley to chuck the smog. If you still want your A/C just run a shorter belt.

My dad just removed my stock cats yesterday. Mapp gas and a breaker bar were his friend. Leave the gas on the cat bolts near the stock 30 pound exhaust manifolds for a good half minute then slip your socket and extensions on an really work that breaker bar till it comes loose then zip them off with the air gun. The threads on the exhaust manifolds are fairly short so the job is not that difficult.

If you don't need it for inspection, I'd chuck it. It's just added crap. You'd be amazed at how much room there is without it.

Smog pumps make obnoxious noises. They must perish. Also, the plumbing makes changing plugs a lot more difficult on that side. I may gut the smog pump on the Mark VII this weekend. Its getting louder.

just putting in a pair of hi-flow cats is nice since you won't get in shit for not having any, and they let all the sound through but smooth out the tinny cracky sound a tad. I did take out my smog pump and A/C with all the brackets and thiers so much more room, and i still passed my e-test...barely but a pass none the less.
