Ok, ever since I did my HEI conversion, My engine has been knocking just a little bit. I have set the timing numerous times and it does not fix it. Here is what I think the problem is. That stupid retarded metal bracket thing! Why the hell is it ahaped like thta? What part of it should the timing mark be set to? It should just be shaped like an arrow or something. Where on this thing should be my mark for the timimg be set to. My balancer is clean and the numbers are clearly visible. Please advise. I will post pics next.

listen to scott... you want to use the flat pointer, NOT the round/circle thing.
also, if you are using vacuum advance, make sure the hose is connected to PORTED vacuum, not manifold vacuum.2003 Town Car Signature - 3.27 RAR, Dual exhaust and J-mod - SOLD 9/2011

The hole thing is for some sort of factory test thing, which I believe uses the big groove that seems like it ought to have something to do with setting the timing.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

1) Have you performed a TDC test to be sure your "0" mark really is at true TDC?
2) Do you know what your advance curve is?
3) I'm told (haven't verified myself) that different timing lights may give different readings.
4) Different engines may like different total advance figures. What works for Thain's engine may be too much or too little for yours.2012 Mazda5 Touring | Finally working on the LTD again!

yeah... I bumped the initial timing on my engine from 8 to 13 degrees advanced and while I was doing that, it didn't even flinch at 20... ran like a top. though after setting that to 13 and putting the spout connector back in, just for grins I checked the idle advance and it was hovering around 20. Not sure I wanna push it much further though.

I dunno and I can't check it right now since that car has no radiator.

Oooof, All good info. Setting it all the way to to the right thingie made the engine happy. however, I thnk it could perform better. When it was too advanced and knocking, it had more balls. I think Im gona advance it just a bit.Vehicle: 1965 Pontiac Catalina (fastback 2+2)

probably worth looking into tuning your advance curve. It may need less total advance and brought in sooner so it can run more initial, or something else. I dunno, distributor tuning is a hazy area.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).
