Sounds like a timing issue.1984 CV tudor 351W, 4bbl, 5-speed best time in the 1/8 8.39 at 80 with 1.80 60ft time.

1) Check firing order
2) Set baseline timing to about 10 deg. BTDC. Check true TDC with a piston stop if you have the patience. (I made mine for free out of an old spark plug.) Make sure you know a little about your current advance curve (how much total timing and how soon it all comes in). Probably leave the vacuum advance disconnected at least to start.
3) Set idle according to the usual instructions, check for vacuum leaks, and make sure the choke is opening fully.
This *should* at least get the car drivable. At least, it supposedly does for most vehicles. For me, I found some annoying popping behavior at part throttle with the stock calibration, so I went a stage richer for my baseline. Rich isn't great, but at least you won't usually break stuff by going rich.
The owner's manual has guidelines for setting the WOT and part-throttle calibrations ... they're a little hard to implement properly without going to a dragstrip (which I've never done), but I did take a tip from an old Holley book and disconnected the secondaries for primary tuning. The #1487 (?) tuning kit has all the usual stepup springs and should have most of the rods and jets you're likely to need to get decent drivability, though you can of course get creative if you have access to rods and jets not in that kit.2012 Mazda5 Touring | Finally working on the LTD again!

Keep in mind:
He's using the same distributor that was on his fuel injected 302. I assume this means complete with TFI module, etc etc.
Does this mean that he's going to have problems because the fuel injection system is missing? I don't know. But I believe he's going to need a duraspark box, at least.Originally posted by gadget73There is nothing more permanent than a temporary fix.

It's possible, I'm not sure. I don't think the stock fuel injection distributor, which gets its timing information from the computer, will play nice without the entire fuel injection system in place.
But I'd want to wait for confirmation from those who know for sure.Originally posted by gadget73There is nothing more permanent than a temporary fix.

you need a steel gear on your distributor if you're using an 88 Mustang HO motor, otherwise the distributor gear will chew itself to shreds and fill the motor with shiny glitter. The gear on the EFI distributor should be swappable to the one out of your CFI motor. The other option is to just get a distributor for an 85 Mustang with a 5.0 and a 5 speed. Its already got the gear you need.
If you're using a TFI distributor, toss it for a Duraspark system. The TFI has no spark advance, which is not useful.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).
