good weekend, engine striped down =)

so, this weekend, my best buddy came up from virginia. He's in the Navy, and is headed to Kuwait for 6 months. The really hard part about that is that he ships out in a couple weeks and his wife is due with their first child October 4th.

anywho, we tore into my engine some more, got it striped down and ready to go to the machine shop

mostly planning a somewhat stock rebuild. going to bore out the cylinders some to have fresh walls.. machine the decks some for a little more compression. I dont have a full parts list yet, I've been very busy this term at school. We've been doing air inlet, exhaust, starting systems, ignition, starting electronics tommorow and then advanced engine performance and diagnostics (aka the new driveability course)

Switching to a carb, with full egr delete.

Port/polish/rebuild heads (just going to stick with stock for now, cant afford aftermarket heads)

mild cam targeting low end tq.

mustang shorty headers. rest of the exhaust is up in the air. It will be dual though

i havent fully decided what intake and carb yet, but it all depends on if the block is actually in good shape. Taking it to the machine shop next week or so.

target hp is 225-275, but not as important as tq
target tq is in the vacinity of 300 with a peak preferably below 2800 rpm.

I think it's doable, even with this being a non HO, just going to take some work, and money. But, even if I can't quite get those numbers, it will be a vast improvement over what's in there, in power, driveability and reliability.

By spring, the rebuilt engine and tranny will be in. then after a break in period, onto body, paint and interior.

If you are going to bore it out, maybe select a set of pistons that will give you your desired compression ratio without having to deck the block or mill the heads. When you take material off of these surfaces, your lifter pre-load will not be right with stock length pushrods and the intake ports may not align correctly. Keith Black sells some cheaper hypereutectic pistons that can raise your compression.

What is the casting number on your heads? If I recall correctly, your engine was CFI, so it won't have the E6SE heads people try to avoid. Its chambers might be larger than E7TE, but you can select a piston to give you the compression you want.

whatever intake you get, have them port match the intake gasket. It helps smooth the flor for more power instead of creating turbulence from the edges sticking into the port.

The 4x4 cam thats a step down from mine with 1.7 rr's might be a good choice if you want that tq peak closer to 2800. Here's a pic of my sheet back in Sept. of last year with tq peaking ~3450:
