    AOD

    Dear Gurus,
I seem to bebuild the automatic transmission on my 89 Colony Park every 30k. I live in the mountains (nearest supermarket is 38 miles/75 minutes away. I've been driving in overdrive unless I was pulling a mountain - gear of choise. Should drive be my gear of choice except Interstate? PS: Virginia to Canada 23 mpg.

Yeah, sounds like you are burning up that OD band....

Ever considered a mild performance build AOD? A shift kit firms those shifts up, But also makes everything last longer because the shifts happen right away, and none of that slow engaging crap...

    Just something to consider...

Keep it in D and get a tranny cooler if you don't already have one.

Hill climbing needs D. THe overdrive band in an AOD is weak, so if you do a lot of hauling, mountain climbing, or whatever that puts added strain on the transmission, a cooler and an upgraded OD band and OD servo are a great idea. A properly built AOD is pretty tough, but in stock form they aren't so hot.

              Dear Gurus,
I'd take Scott up on his kind offer (plus I'd like to buy him a beer) but I've just spent 1100 to have the tranny rebuilt. Can I put a tranny cooler and/or shift kit for cheaper?

a shift kit costs under $100 and a good tranny cooler goes for $50

realistically how much engine output can an aod handle?

with performance shift kit, rebuild, and a decent manual valve body
