I'm gonna put some Rotella 15W40 in it and hope for the best. My old school friend always used Rotella in his older cars and it quieted them up quite a bit.

By the way... anyone actually interested in the whole engine sans the valve covers, oil pan, harness, etc? I just might sell the whole engine outright since my new engine and HO stuff will replace just about everything.

Like I said, the blackberry really takes the pitch out of it. It sounds really bad in person. In person it's a semi quiet rod knock... it's very clear with the accessory belt off. It's not loud just yet, but it's getting there.... it will only wear down more and more.

Sounds familiar. Doesn't sound as bad as mine though. Yet mine still makes oil pressure... I'm driving with this motor until I can get my explorer motor all together and looking pretty.

You gonna blow yours up when the new motor is ready to go in?

Is the replace engine light on all the time, or just at idle? If it goes away above idle, don't worry about it. If it never attempts to go out when the motor is warm, then its pretty well fried. It might keep going, or it might not. When I killed the original motor in the Towncar, it went down the road perfectly quiet with the oil pressure gauge sitting squarely on 0. It may have gone quite a while that way, but I didn't try it.

I'll probably end up driving it for now until I get my HO engine, which won't be much longer. Like I said, the nearly complete engine will be showing up on here soon minus a few things, or on eBay.

And actually at idle it doesn't even come on at all.... it only comes on in gear.... and it just awkwardly flickers.

oh, its fine then. If its not steady on all the time, its got years left in the motor. I wouldn't be concerned at all about driving it.

Don't put gear oil in it. Never put gear oil anywhere but the rear axle or transmissions that call for it. Any bronze in the engine is going to get eaten. (ie: things like bushings, and plugs in the oil galleys, and any equivalent alloys in whats left of the bearings that are in it.

I was driving it for a few days, and the noise got progressively worse, so I parked it. It can now be heard with the accessory belt on...and it's definitely a rod....the "replace engine" light is now steady on at idle. No big deal... a friend of mine gave me that '94 5.0 HO instead of selling to me as I agreed to help her sell a few big ticket items she has. I'm picking up my ECM, upper plenum, TB and EGR spacer from a guy with a '88 GT to go on it. So I will actually have a few SN95 parts for sale if anyone is interested.

I actually already have nearly everything disconnected and it's about ready to come out. Anyone want to buy a 86k 5.0 with a rod knock? I'm gonna post it in the for sale section in a few days (maybe a week or 2 depending) when it's finally out.
