    Wagon "blew up" !!

    1990 CV 5.0 SW,
first:: the cap came off from power steering fluid and some spilled i guess on some stuff -WITH THE CAR off.

2nd: drove car around block to circulate fluid, AND power steering made noise while turnign ( THOUGH IT TURNED WITH COMPLETE EASE ( prob. due to spilled fluid)

3rd:: belt made a little noise also due to some fluid spill- i guess.

FOR THE doozy!!!! while driving and tran suddenly could not downshift (ONLY WENT TO NEUTRAL FROM 3RD GEAR) few minutes later it was able to downshift again.

HOWEVER WHEN I WENT to put car in reverse to back up---the whole shifting was messed up and it was stuck. PARK BECAME R AND REVERSE BECAME N. and TONS OF WHITE Smoke was pouring out of exhaust.

i don't know if any of these are related or the cause or what happened in my car.

any help would be appreciate. I think this is the last straw. i don't have anymore time for this.

1: you were turning the wheel with the engine off weren't you?
2: air in the system. Top it off with Type F and run the wheel lock to lock a few times. It will purge.
3: fluid on the belt. Wipe it off as best you can
4: check your TV cable. The bushing may have fallen apart. The fluid level may also be low.

When you say exhaust, do you mean smoking off the manifold, or out of the tailpipe?

The pointer is usually out of whack. Count the clicks of the shift lever. If thats not where its supposed to be, possibly the linkage is bent or loose. The transmission basically can't fail internally in any way that would move the shift pattern around. The 1990 does have an aluminum shift tube with a cable that makes all the magic happen. The aluminum tubes crack sometimes and the shift lever flops around like a dead fish. It might also have loose bolts under the column. Check for cracks or loose bolts.

yes i did turn wheel with car off. i had to move car which died in a parking lot a few blocks from me.

found culprit of tran shift problem. - i mess around with a string/ pully attached to lever under dashboard/steering wheel. ( i was not sure what it was at the time.)

        anyway two things:

QUESTION:::::there is a black 'cord' hanging under dashboard by pedal area that has a tip with a yellow (top/button/) that can be pushed in - (like the things in the door that turn off light when door closes. ) WHAT IS THAT.

2nd thing:::;; few days ago, while trying to fix battery cables, I accidently pluged a cord that supposed to go to - terminal,, onto the + terminal and when I turned key, my computer or something made a series of loud beeps and my car shut off after a second and would not let the fuel pump or car turn on ( UNTIL I REALIZED AND REPLACED WIRES CORRECTLY). ----- could that have damaged any wires or systems or would fuses/breakers, prevent any damage.--

fuses would prevent fire. you may have damaged something. Generally though, if everything worked immediately after that, it should still work, but it might be worth checking the computer out.

no idea what dangly bit you speak of. Pictures?

Hooking up a wire to the + post that belongs on the - side could be problematic. If its the small single wire for the ECM that I strongly suspect it is, then it may have smoked the car's computer. Thats the negative voltage feed to the ECM, and it connects to several other wires that are grounded. It may have smoked something inside the ECM, or melted wiring in the EFI harness. Both of which could be very problematic, however the ECM and the wiring harness are very easy to replace as long as you get the same year stuff. Its all plug and pray.

anyone have a diagram of the ignition wiring for a 1990 CV. 5.0.

i have been playing around with ignition wires trying to find out why car starts somedays and not at other times ( why at certain times when i turn key, lights on dash turn on..ect.. and sometimes not-figured ignition wires)

i disconnected an automatic start i had hooked up and when i reconnected battery car began to start for a sec ( must have left two ignition wires touching each other.)

i will try and pull the whole wire set from a junkyard and splice and install.

BTW:::: regarding hooking up wrong wire to + terminal,,,, after switching it back to normal place , the car worked and started up a few times.... ( again until i played around with ignition wires...due to my automatic start clicking abnormally...and then the symtoms i laid on top this post.... s/t start--- s/t nothing...)
