    Timing, SEE PIC!!

I was talking with scott last night and he told me (due to recent engine troubles) to check the timing... the engine wont run right so he told me to

"you can check it by cranking it
first put the balancer to top dead center
see if the rotor points to #1 plug
if its off 180 deg, rotate the crank
    should point to #1
if it's off by much timing chain jumped"

I did this after much cranking to get it to 0 on the balancer... I wasn't sure exactly what constituted as "off by much" so i marked it and took a picture!
Let me know what you guys think.... thanks!

The green mark is where the contact point for cyl #1 is... as you can see the rotor isnt dead center with it...

here is a picture of the balancer...i know it looks like there are two zeros, however the one it is not lined up with is actually a 10...it just doesn't show up in the picture well...i edited it slightly to make the numbers and marks more visible..

This confuses the bejesus out of me....I want to set mine where it's supposed to be just for the hell of it - It runs decently, but I figure it wouldn't hurt to make sure the timing is correct. Trouble is, I don't have a timing light, or a clue.

Thats fine. It won't be dead on #1 at TDC, it will be dead-on at roughly 10 BTDC. If the timing chain jumped, it would be way the hell off, like a full tower at least. Usually that goes along with a cranking sound like it has no compression.

^^^ this, and get a good look at the plugs

then fuel pump/supply and fuel quality are also things to look at

This all started happening after he got gas. If he didn't mention it.

it might be the gas itself then

take a sample, see if it looks muddy or has water in it. take it right at the shraeder valve, fill up a 20oz soda bottle and let it settle

Did the carbed cars have a scraeder valve?
