how big a job is fuel pump replacement?

Does the tank need to come off to replace the fuel pump? I know a slight fuel pump whine is normal, but I don't think at this volume.

How long would it take a competent car doctor to replace mine? Could I do it myself with guidance from you folks?

being a northern car, you might also need a fuel tank and fuel tank straps.......no it's not a hard job if the car is real low on fuel, you have a decent jack and jack stands......if you dont have jack stands, dont crawl under the car
the filler neck unbolts and slides out of the way
      the fuel sender gets unplugged
the supply, return and vent lines get unhooked
the fuel pump power wiring gets unplugged and fished thru the upper brace
straps held in with 2 nuts, need a 15mm deep socket and a long extension......dont worry if the studs pull out, sometimes they do

Yeah, even though the tank is up in there, it's not too bad. My Dad and I did one on my Mom's '83 TC she used to have, and it was straightforward.

The pumps in these car's are pretty noisy yet durable. Just wondering, how many miles do you have on the car?

110k I think. Something around there...180k kilometers. It's hideously loud but hasn't been giving me trouble so far as I can tell.

I can't take the noise. I tried taking an exhaust video by sitting the camera between the pipes a couple of feet back and the fuel pump whine is too much.

thanks for the responses and whatnot guys.

the one in my Mark VII went 195k before it died. The one in the Towncar was replaced around 160k and it was perfectly fine. The tank failed, and I put a new pump in while it was apart. The new pump is louder than the old one.

I replaced a working one by mistake, was having issues with the relay, so I have a working spare. There's no harm in replacing it, especially for preventative I suppose, but they've been known to last well over 100k. The noise can be a bit much, I have decent high pitch and I hear that high pitch whine with the old and new one. If I were you, I'd get the same bosch/motocraft one it came with or the new one may not be as reliable.

Definitely good advice here. The original pump is a good reliable pump, and has a reputation to back it self up, so I wouldn't stray from a working product. On the noise, I doubt it will be much quieter with the new one. From outside the car they are kind of loud, both of mine were/are.
