    What Happens.........

........when you run a stock torque converter (beefed up tranny) with a non-stock engine (H/C/I bolt-ons)? Let's say the cam is something like a TFS stage 2 and the heads are decent.

Oh shiz!!!! I didn't see the forum for transmissions. Must be new cause it wasn't there last week. Can this thread be moved?

That's what I sorta figured; though I thought at first it would just stall out. Most people that I know with mod'd engines running auto trannies already had somebody put the aftermarket TCs in them; but couldn't give me an answer. I was just curious.

i'm running a stock converter with 204,000 miles, granted i have a ho cam, but the heads and intakes are ported.....runs fine.......my 60' times may not be the best, but i built the car for driveability and reliability.....hopefully soon i can get my aod rebuilt, and i'll go with a 2400 stall converter unless i get to experience one of these high stall aod cars with a properly working aod
the 88 townie i built with the wide ratio aod and the factory high stall converter really hauled ass for a bone stock explorer motor......i didnt get to race the customers car, but i can tell you it is faster than my town car

the stock ho cam is plenty docile enough where a stock converter is fine for drivibilty
cams that have a powerband like 3000-6200 is where its a problem, when the catalog says 3.73- 4.10 minimum, headers required, high stall required

the E cam i had in my last motor hated just about anything under 2000 rpms, especially 4th gear. anything over 2000 rpms and it was fine. if i had a 2400 stall converter in it then i probably wouldnt have minded it

              think a 2400 will be ok with a 351 and a comp cams xe264?
2400 is the highest stall in the budget, and if i put the used tci in there, it's going to void the warranty on the aod

Well, with a bone stock original as equipped from Ford converter, I'd expect it to swell up and take out your center main bearing in addition to being really soggy on the bottom end. The stock converters do not take so well to high RPM or power levels. If you drive it like a stock car, the converter won't balloon but if you're going to drive it like its stock, whats the point in building a motor?

The TFS stage2 is advertised to start making power at 2500, so you want a stall at least that high. You might want to look into other options to start making power at a lower RPM, perhaps a stage 1 or even something aimed more at the truck world. Weight wise, a Vic has more in common with a truck than a Mustang, which is what many of the smallblock Ford cams are targeted at.
