I got a new starter drive from Murrays (O'rileys) for 19.50.

Replaced it myself, because I got the Whurr, Whurr nothing thing going on, started to get worse/more annoying. Took about 20 minutes including removing and putting the starter back in. Way better then buying a new starter.

I have the starter drive already, I just don't know what I'm getting myself into by crawling under there and taking the starter off.

You just have to open the starter up. Make sure to see how everything goes together inside before you start ripping it apart, take a picture even. I just went for it, its not as hard as it seems.

No starter/alternator rebuild shops around? That is my first choice.

all it is that you need to do is unbolt the bolt that holds the cable to the starter if its a direct drive and then undo the 2 bolts htat hold it to the bell housing.

if its a gear reduction(which i doubt) then you undo the nut that holds the wire to the motor and side the solenoid wire off the starter and undo the 2 bolts that hold hte assembly to the bell housing.

my 90 merc was made in canada and built in february as well and had the direct drive motor but i swapped it to a gear reduction which was easy

I've had 2 of the cheap ones from vatozone die. Another reason I parked my car....

The starter is easy to remove, just 2 bolts and the wire.

                  ^^^Yup
I used a visteon starter when the original one died. They use all new brushes and parts, not just fix whatever was wrong with the old core.

So let me get this straight. You are going to pull the starter, take it apart, replace the drive, put it back together, put it back in and that's it. So not only are you spending money on replacing the drive, but you are also spending time taking out the starter TWICE when it comes time for you to replace the whole starter anyway. At this point if the drive is going, the bearings in the starter probably aren't far off. Why not spend the money NOW on a whole new reman instead of wasting all this time and money on doing it the hard way?

Whats so hard about it? My buddy has one on his truck that has been going trouble free for 5 years. It consists of 3 '70s ones that were F*ct. It took me an hour to make a working one. Just because the drive is bad don't mean the rest of it is.

Usually is the old style ones work good other then the drive, just fix it. If I had a scanner I would upload the pages from an old truck and van repair manual that hows how to test and rebuild that starter.

I will likely replace the drive for the time being and put a complete new starter on when I have the money.
