Speedo cable binding probably. Mines all electric so I don't have that issue.

Mine does that and it also ticks annoyingly. No coincidence.

You MAY be able to fix it temporarily by pulling it and squirting grease into it, but that's temporary, and probably not worth the trouble.

Rockauto has the Dorman (high quality) cruise-control speedo cables for 15+ shipping and taxes

        DORMAN Part # 03175

4 dollars more for the non-cruise length

If you try to lube it, get some graphite grese for speedo cables... NOT regular grease, as it will gum up when it gets cold... and cause so much drag it will break either the gears or the speedo... A friend did that to his classic car... Took him a year to find a new speedo when his ground itself to death one winter...

interesting... the red grease doesn't seem to have that issue... or it just doesn't get cold enough here in Texas (no negative temps... did get down to 2 degrees this winter though for a short time). Of course I didn't grease the cable, just the odo gears where they're mounted and the point where the spinning shaft meets the spring. It doesn't squeal any more, though the odo gears still rattle like a maraca. Their ends are too small (worn down). Anyone know where I can get the odo/trip gears for the 88 MGM speedo? (long white ones)

mine shakes at high speed enough that I'm squeemish to go over 110 kmh (65ishmph) in 100kmh zones, because it shakes up to 125+kmh.
