new have gm but looking at mustang

I havent posted on this site but I have been lurking, I have an 89 merc gm but I have been looking for a mustang as a project car. the one I was going to look at changed the dsecription to this:
1985 Ford Mustang GT Conv. 5.0 auto p/windows and conv top. Car needs polution tube going into converter. Body is clean top is good.Ran great till tube broke.
What would this be I know and how hard would it be to get it running without all of the emisions

If you dont have to worry about emissions legaly, then you dont have to worry about that tube. It will run find without it... but being broken should not cause it to run bad. The guys description sounds fishy to me...

It will actually pass emissions with no troubles without that tube. The air injection to the converter is only to help burn off excess fuel before the converter is warmed up. In effect, it works for about 10 minutes when the engine is first started, and really does nothing after that. With the pipe rotted off, it just makes an annoying exhaust leak that can be fixed by cutting the tube off and plugging it with a pipe plug and some JB weld or similar.

actually, an 85 Mustang with a auto is a CFI motor, Same one they put in the CV/GM.

If the air injection tube going to the back of the heads is rusted/broken its causing a huge exhaust leak, which will make the car run poorly.

The 85 Mustang CFI motor is a little different. It has a dual snorkle air cleaner and finned aluminum valve covers.

and a different cam and computer....

My air tube to the heads was broke for the longest time and it ran ok
Didnt notice any difference once I fixed it.

85 CFI got stuck with iron manifolds and the same HO flat tappet cam they had been using.
85/86 GT convertibles are my favorite. Being a convertible, there is a better chance that it isn't rotten.
Another excellent candidate for an Explorer motor swap and Stealth/Holley induction.
I would jump all over that car if the price is reasonable. A much more simple project than trying to do something with your 89 GM. That car has the cool factor covered........ by far.

I had my brother go look at it while I was at work, I dont think Im going to get it because it is missing trim that let water into the doors and around the top but the rest of the body was good. That and it was broken into so it would need new door locks. thanks for the replies.
