Where there are visual anti-tampering/sniffer emission inspections.

Not all US states have inspection, but its a federal thing that says you cannot remove the converters. The chances of actually being caught are admittedly small if you don't have inspection, but technically its not legal anywhere.

Also, some Canadian provinces do have emissions inspections. Don't know the specifics, but I've known people who had to go through it.

I have HEARD that you can sometimes find certain types of shops in certain parts of town that are sometimes willing to do it. Though, supposedly you won't be actually billed for cat removal but for some other service of comparable value.

          Still, not recommended.

Around here we just take them out, and bang the insides out. Then you put em right back on there.

Can't legally remove them here either. Federal law as well. Although, I have been told with the van, if it is hauling people it has to have one, if it is being used as a cargo van it does not.
Other shops won't touch it because...

              A: has no cat now

B: has a side exit exhaust in front of the wheel

Some shops don't care and just do what you tell them.

My truck went to the same place, the only thing they said is if it comes back without an E-brake cable it won't leave till its fixed. *Cough midas Cough*

Why would your local Midas be making threatening comments about an e-brake cable?

i'm guessing they're citing some safety laws? I think a shop can legally tell you that you cannot drive an unsafe vehicle off their premises. They cannot prevent you from having it towed away though, because that would constitute illegal seizure of property.

Oh, interesting. The e-brake thing struck me as particularly odd since I once had a shop show a distinct lack of interest in fixing a nonfunctioning e-brake for me ("since it's an automatic, usually no one uses them anyway"). Says the guy who recently disconnected the parking brake on his Vic because the cables were seizing up.

it is kind of BS. My parking brake gets used every 2 years for inspection purposes. I like it to be there and working though, never know when you might lose a line on the hydraulic system and need that mechanical backup. The parking brake with rear discs is truly pathetic though, the shoes are just tiny. The drum brake cars get to use that whole 10 or 11" drum, I get maybe a 6" drum.

The parking brake on the rear disk is small, but they do work.

                            It started out as:

Midas: "You have a leaking transmission line, and where the hell is the e-brake cable?"

Me: "Uh, I'm fixing it up, have to put the new one on this weekend"

Midas: "Well don't bring it back like that or it isn't leaving till its fixed. That doesn't look like a '77 Dodge btw, looks like an '80s cab and nose"

Me: "Ok, and you are right, it is from an '86 actually..."

End of story. LOL Legally no shop has to let you drive it away in an unsafe condition.
